Resembling a crudely fashioned forest ‘battlement’ from an angle and a nice reflection to the earlier Forestmen models but with a more modern feel, the Bandit Ambush was among the most interesting of castle’s last models before the infamous ‘dark age’ or 1998.

A sturdy model complete with a weapons rack, foliage for camouflage, a modest catapult and a depository for stolen goods, the Bandit Ambush doesn’t amount to the mst elegant of battlements, although in larger numbers, I could easily see them scattered about the hillsides and forests of a lawless region.

Complete with this package include a nice myriad of useful construction elements such as basic bricks, plates, cylinders, assorted arches, weapons and large rock pieces, making it a must have for constructing a reasonable battlement and an fighting force to secure it. This is definitely a first rate accessory kit!

As a color scheme for a forest setting, I found the use of green, brown and dark grey elements to be more than appropriate, as it seemed to attribute a nice sense of camouflage. My only gripe in this respect was the use of light grey elements instead of dark grey, since they seem to contrast a tad too much.

For a defensive post, I found the function to be a bit on the lacking side, since one catapult really isn’t near enough in terms of defense (consider that a catapult employed by a rival faction would easily outlaunch it by ten times or so, so it would be only worthy for a last line of defense, if the post was not already abandoned or its defenders killed.) The only other noteworthy feature here its ladder, which can be used to provide additional defense to its stash of jewels.

Looking towards alternative building, this set is definitely a nice starting block for anyone interested in taking the Dark Forest theme to a new angle, alternations ranging from rickty treehouses to defensive forts. However, it would be advised to combine this set with Hemlock Stronghold

In an overview, I found this set to be a rather favorable addition to the Dark Forest theme and an excellent source for part ravenous builders and collectors alike. These models always seem to be in short supply, so it’s always a prudent choice to snatch them whenever/ wherever they turn up.

My suggestions? The model makes for a nice addend to any collection.
