Signing in stores a browser cookie. Signing out deletes the cookie. The cookie contains your member number and password (scrambled) so that your browser can authenticate you.

...as long as my web browser is running.
(Sign me out automatically if I shut down my browser.)

...until I sign out manually.
(Don't sign me out automatically, even if I shut down my web browser.)

...for  hours  minutes.
(Then sign me out automatically, if I've forgotten to sign out manually.)
