The Pod Race sequence and the final saber duel are the most impressive scenes in
all of starwars, even topping the hoth scene in Ep V.  I love the way Obi Wan was
able to predict when the energy field barriers were going to open up, he had his
saber lit and ready first (using his jedi forsight).  Both me and my friend had
the same idea though, when Maul's saber was broken in half, he should have held on
to both halves and fought with one in each hand, that would have been too
awesome.

Maybe he hadn't trained that way?  Maybe the second half was damaged (what
are the chances of Obi-wan scoring a direct hit on the center joint?)

Maybe because it would have caused Obi-wan to sneer, pull out his gun, and
blow Darth Maul away.  (Oops, wrong movie)

The pod race scene was so good, it reminded me of the canyon race in
Iron eagle, which is one of my favorite movies.  They got the sound perfect for
the pods, Sebulba's was jaw dropping.

During the pod race, Kristin leaned over and quietly asked me, "why don't
they just fly over everything [like the cliffs, etc]?"  Right after that,
Anakin went over the edge of a cliff, and we saw why they didn't just go
over -- those racers have a limited-range on the lift.

Really cool effect -- must be scary the first time you drive off a drop.

But if they hadn't used that trick in the pod race, Darth Maul's cliff-jump
on his speeder/scooter would have been more impressive.

(...) I agree completely with your 2nd viewing assessment, though I also knew going in the first time, that Jar Jar was going to be a nuissence, so I was able to look past him, but you do have to admit that he's well done technically, if overly (...) (25 years ago, 24-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
