I was curious, how do you add a stud to a part if you're using MAX2DAT
? Can it be done in 3DS or you have to edit the part later ?
I thought that we've agreed that the new parts would have to pass L3P
tests for coincident verts and bow-ties, isn't this required ?

MAX2DAT isn't really meant to be a comprehensive part authoring tool... it's
easy to build simple objects (like a 2x2 tile or 1x1 round plate) directly in
LEdit with primatives... but objects like complex technic pieces, wheels, etc
often have intricate geometries that are difficult to fully grasp, sketch and
*especially* to build in .DAT format..
i have a great deal of experience with autodesk packages and after building a
few technic pieces using excel spreadsheets and hand-drawn sketches i realized
that coding an app to convert ASCII output from 3DSMAX would allow me to use a
package with extremely powerful modeling tools.. that way i wouldn't have to
hack together excel formulas to create complicated geometries....
so adding in studs, and other primatives comes in after i've converted the MAX
mesh to .DAT.. in fact, the MAX mesh is often very incomplete, exclusive of
faces that i know i can create via primatives... i generally use MAX for areas
that would be impossible to create by hand.. take a look at the wheels i did
earlier this year... try taking a cone and boring holes through it.. boolean
operations in MAX make things like this possible in no time...

You make it sound like this is the end of the world. :)

yeah.. i know.. i have a bad habit of needing perfection, order and
organization in everything... heheh... i'm a high high "J" on the myers-briggs
tests.. heh eh e..
