Anyone made a Gonk yet out of LEGO?

I figure, one way to make him out of LEGO is a pair of dark gray minifig
legs attached to a brick or something, but there's probably a more elegant
solution using some of the techniques that the SW Ep1 LEGO sets used for
the pit droids...?

You forgot the best one. When he got his feet fried in Jaba's Droid Torture
Chamber. By the way the reason that this caused Gonk pain is because the heat
caused coolant to be discharged and started him overheating.

I remember I had an action figure of that one!
I would have thought something similar, but it would need to be
two bricks high, 3-studs-wide. And if you still have any,
probably the old, 2x4's with red stripe and 4 black diamonds,
to make up one of the bricks for decorative purposes.

This is slightly off-topic ... actually, completely off-LEGO ...

I don't know whether or not to take credit for this, but I figure I may
as well get my name in the pipeline. Although I was not the original
prophet of Gonk, I like to deem myself the first disciple.
In fall of 1993, when I was but a wee freshman in college, I stumbled
upon the starwars newsgroup. Fascinated and intrigued, I forwarded
various and sundry articles to my high-school buddy at Bowdoin, who was
less computer-savvy (ahem) and incapable of accessing newsgroups.
One time he wrote back and suggested I post an article raising "Gonk",
that little rectangular droid who takes two steps, makes that funny
noise, turns 90 degrees, and starts over again, to the level of deity.
He had given it that name, but my small part was to write that article,
post it, and expect nothing more.
What ensued was a holy war.
People loved the droid, people hated the droid - it was really
hysterical to follow the comments, and track the evolution of a
demigod. :) I have saved some of the articles that most tickled our
fancy, but not the original post - if any of you gonk fans out there
have it (it'll be posted from sullis3@rpi.edu, around late
September/early October 1993), PLEASE send me a copy .... and to all of
you skeptics, I'd like to defy you to unearth any mention of GONK prior
to that post! :) By the way, does anybody know how to access old old
newsposts? Or are they gone forever?
Of course, I really don't expect half of you to believe me, and I don't
expect the other half to care (lol), but it really, perversely, pleases
me to see him still standing proud and Gonk over 5 1/2 years later.
Well, there you have it ... the inspiration and birth of Gonk. Hope
this clears up some aspects, though I fear it hopelessly muddies the
waters.

I always thought the EG-6's looked like Huey, Dewie and Louie from _Silent
Running_. OK, just dug up some SR info. I guess there isn't that much

I've got to find SR on video somewhere. I don't think I've seen it since
before Star Wars came out. Well, maybe since Return of the Jedi. Either
way, it's been too long.

Excellent! He looks odd in the orthographic LDraw version, but definitely
"comes to life" in the photos! :)
I especially like the way you used plates fore and aft of his legs to make
them look shorter.
Is he tilted back a bit because he's 2x4 and not centered on the legs? How
does he look as a 2x3 frame?

The 2x4 Gonk is a bit front heavy hence the tilt. I decided to make a 2x3
version. I was considering it anyway but your suggestion pushed me to it. I
do like it just as well if not better. I used a different color scheme and
took some pictures of it. I added the new Gonk to my Gonk page...

I love it!
I don't think he needs a different name, though, does he? -- Your 2x3 Gonk
is much closer to the "real" Gonk than your 2x4 Gonk is? According to the
book droids book[1], Gonk's legs are equidistant from his front & back.
(But the book isn't necessarily canon -- I think in Ep4 the legs are a bit
further back -- and this is how he looks in _Trooper_Clerks_ as well.)

What if you're (like me) only working from pictures, and don't have a physical
representation to hold. And try doing it without *real* bricks (i.e. In a CAD
program). Let's see what *you've* got.... ;)

Love the Gonk. Thanks for the directions. I always enjoyed making robots
when I was a kid. If a part couldn't be used for anything else (airplane fin,
jetski handlebars, metal detector) it could always be used in a robot.

Hey, do we have that message archived from our own LUGNETter who has (and may be)
the original story of the "Gonk" name? If it's any consolation, it now appears to
have official Lucasfilm sanction: The recent Star Wars toys have such a droid
included with a figure, and it is indeed called a "Gonk" Droid on the package.

Thanks a lot. Nothing like an 8 month old thread resurfacing :-). I assume
you found one of my Gonk pages that liked back to my anouncement about him and
then you posted.

Truthfully I think Gonk is one of my favorite creations even though he is one

(rec.arts.scifi.starwars.misc) ng. For those of you who aren't RASSM'ers
(AKA
rats, depending on personal preference), you're missing out on a lot of

Thanks for the inspiration, I hadn't thought about the jetski handlebar piece.
I'm now building 'bots with serious eyebrow problems.
My favorite: take the Gasgano 'fig. Remove the head. Stick on a
handlebar-on-a-clip. Turn two of the arms around, so the elbow sticks forward.
Lean the body forward. Rotate the handlebars slightly back from upright. Twist
the clip slightly to one side, to indicate a listening stance.
Presto! Instant monkey-bot. :)

Whoop, I paid no attention to how old the thread was. I just saw the page
that said, "Tell me how you like it on Lugnet" and I did. But I'm glad I
