I will tell you what the book said. The book noted that those barriers are a security device designed to slow down and halt intruders getting close to the basement area of the palace. Apparently they tripped the security system while on route on the (...) (25 years ago, 24-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)

(...) Jedi Speed. It's a commonly (read, in more than one Star Wars book/game/etc) used Force ability. My personal guess as to none of them- Obi-Wan, Maul, or Qui-Gon- used it to get through the barriers is that they were busy using the Force in (...) (25 years ago, 25-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)

From what I remember, the book mentioned that it was appearing that Maul was leading them somewhere intentionally. So I think he was trying to separate them. Correct, Maul was pacing, Q was meditating, OWK was bouncing. Sorry. My favorite part was (...) (25 years ago, 25-May-99, to lugnet.starwars)
