Chris and all,
Well, I believe that I can make July 22.  I need to verify with my wife to make
sure that we have nothing that we must be at on that date.

A good friend of mine has offered us Webspace on his server, if we eventually
want to have a web site. ( Actually, this good friend is not into Lego, but he
is probably the most responsible for me leaving my Dark Age, because he got
several of my friends, and my wife to chip in and get me the RCX Mindstorms kit
for my birthday last year.  And I can tell that he is a good friend, because
even though he isn't into Lego, he looks at my MOCs and gives me his opinions,
and tries to have a conversation with me when I start talking Lego, instead of
letting his eyes glaze over and Ok'ing me to death. )

About the name issue, I don't really have a preference, except that I don't
think that the name should make anyone feel like they shouldn't belong.  Such
as, if we use "Garden State" which is another name for New Jersey, will that
make people in other states less likely to join?  I don't know, but if we think
that's a possibility, then we should go with something else.

I found one more person in the area that I have pointed at the New Jersey group
on LUGNET for details.  His first name is Jeff, let's see if he expresses an
interest also.  :-)

I'm afraid that I have no experience in organizing groups, but I will attempt
to help any way that I can.

An addition to the agenda should probably be talking about requirements for
membership, and additionally, requirements to be a VOTING member. Question:
does someone lose the right to vote if they do not attend meetings? Can someone
who lives at a large distance from our meeting place be considered a voting
member?  I realize that Lindsay Braun has stated that he will be living in
Europe for a year, and this is not directed at him at all.  Someone implied
during the Age discussion on LUGNET that people could join NELUG from anywhere,
and then vote to change the charter.  It was most likely written tongue in
cheek, but we should probably address it.

I keep replying to my own posts...

I'll put a list of availabilities together.

The resounding responses (all three ;-) suggest that 22 July is a good date.
Who can make it for something in Central New Jersey on Saturday, 22 July 2000
at around 1500 EST?  I think this should be an RSVP event so that I can track
who's going to attend.  Please email me for directions and maps with your
participation status.

Potential participants:

Christopher Weeks (me)
Lindsay Braun (for 1.25 months, anyway)
Erik Olson
Andy Lynch
Bryan Kinkel
Jennifer Maher (and SO)
Laurajean Murphy
Matthew Karius
Bianca Nebab
Ed Jones
Jason Mantor

Anyone else?

Names that have displayed popularity:

  NJLUG

TriLUG for the tri-state area (NY, NJ, PA, I'd say)

  UMALUG for upper mid-Atlantic LUG

GardenSLUG (Thanks Lindsay, I love it!)

SEASLUG for Six (Or Several!) Eastern States LUG
Several is more than 3 but not many...NJ, PA, NY, DE, (CT?)
(Thanks Erik, I love this one too!)

If you see this and know someone out there who might be interested, please
point them this way.

Also, it might be productive to have something of an agenda regarding
organizational issues.  At the top of our list might be who we want to
participate, based on the recent age limit debacle for NELUG of course.  A
name would be a good thing to work on if there is a reasonable group of • people
with whom to discuss it.  What else?

I suppose we need a charter or constitution.  I formed a student organization
at the University of Missouri several years ago and they had all kinds of
guidlines about what to do.  My only real knowledge on club formation is • based
on that experience.  So other input is needed.

Chris

(...) That would be my most likely date as well. (...) I'm leaning towards "SEASLUG." ;) (...) My only experience involves extracting money from University bureaucracies, so I won't be much help on this one. (...) I think that if we make it clear (...)
