Howdy all .castle folk.  Now that Lugnet is running as usual again, it's time
to do something that's been absent for a few months.  At Shiri's behest, I'm
gonna take a survey.  My first one, so bear with me.  OK, let's get started,
shall we?

1.  What is your age?
2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?
3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)
4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)
5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?
6.  What was your first castle set?
7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)
8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)
9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?
and...
10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
    swapping arms and the like)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, my answers to the above:
1.  18
2.  Dragon Masters, Black Knights, Forestmen, Wolfpack (4-way tie)
3.  Yes.
4.  <set:6082> (own), <set:6090> (STILL don't have...)
5.  <set:8002> Destroyer Droid (for playability)
6.  <set:6034> Black Monarch's Ghost
7.  Roughly 50%, give or take...
8.  My MOC, Evil King Ragnoth.  Or my sweetie's MOC, Scar.
9.  A small castle outpost w/ three stories and complete furnishings (long ago)
10. Yes.

Lemme know your answers!  I've only been here 4 months, and know some of you
well, but I'm itching to know others, so, let's have it!

1.  What is your age?

A little over a quarter of a century.

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?

Yes.

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)

Yah.

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

But...but...there aren't any castle sets that I both own and not!
I guess you could count the Yellow Castle, since I only still have part of it...

I'd really like to get the Black Knight's Castle, tho.

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?
6.  What was your first castle set?

Yellow Castle, I think.  Maybe one of the others from that era.  I don't recall.

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)

Maybe 25-30%?  I did a lot of bulk buying, so I have a larger percentage of
other sets (like Adventurers) than one might otherwise think.

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)

Tough one.  Umm...pass. (whack) OW! Um, Herr Doktor Cornelius. (rubs head)

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?

Well, the Grey Wolf's tower came close, but I never finished it.  Anything else...

you'll have to wait and see...

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
    swapping arms and the like)

No!  Nonononono....yes.

1.  What is your age?
30

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?
Black Knights by default (they had the most sets available when I was first
got interested in castle)

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)
No. Don't think I have the hang of it yet.  I'd like to try, eventually.

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)
that I own: 6081 - I like that it's lopsided
that I don't own: 6067 (turning out to be harder to find cheap than a Yellow
Castle)

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?
A couple: 6286, 8880, but I just got a RIS 2.0 I've been playing with a lot
lately.

6.  What was your first castle set?
It was either 6085 or 6060 (which I parceled out with my brother, he took
the Crusaders and the lady and I took the BKs and the drunk peasant).

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)
sets: 70%
minifigs: 60%
pieces: 42%
(I have my collection on an Excel spreadsheet)

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)
out-of-the-box: the bullet-helm footsoldier from 6085
MOC: Malcolm, URL here:
http://home.att.net/~brgn/motoslave/collections/L-moc.htm

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?
It's still being built: a mountain with a castle integrated into its south
face.  I haven't kept a piece count, but it's turning out to be 3 cubic feet
or so.

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
swapping arms and the like)
See answer to 8, MOC above.  I have sliced open many a finger with my trusty
(never rusty) X-Acto.

There ya go!

----- Original Message -----
From: "Xcalabur" <Xcalabur@rocketmail.com>
<snip>
My Answers:
1.  What is your age?
1: I'm 30 years old.

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?
2: Hmmm. I like the wolfpack headpieces best.  I don't actually own any
sets, but I have some of these pieces from purchases.

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting
for?!)
3: I am not yet a member of CastleWorld.  I don't have too much time to
build at the moment, but I am working on it.  I love the whole concept of
telling my own stories using my constructions, and I have some ideas
wandering around in my head that I would like to put down some day.  One of
my major holdups is that I do not have access to a digital camera with a
macro mode, so I can't get close ups that are so important for this type of
stuff. I'm working on it, and when I believe that I can contribute, I will
join...

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)
4. My favorite castle set would be 6080 King's Castle.  My younger brother
got this set for his birthday one year, and I "inherited" it when I came out
of my dark ages a few years ago.  I have it (almost completely) assembled on
one of the shelves in my home office.
http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=6080
That said, I really don't much care for any of the castle sets that I have
seen in person.  I much prefer MOCs. :-)

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?
5: Easy, 8480 Technic Space Shuttle.  This is such a well designed set from
just about every point of view, complexity, playability, action, etc.  There
are pieces in it that I would like to use for other purposes, but I just
can't get myself to take it apart.  I think that is the _definition_ of a
great set!

6.  What was your first castle set?
6: 6080 King's Castle, see #4 above.

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)
7: I would guess 20%

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)
8:  I'm still making my own characters up... Just swapping pieces, not
modifying.  I don't care if other people do, but I just haven't felt the
need.

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever
built?
9: I have built my Red Church
http://www.andyandjackie.com/lego/RedChurch.htm , which started out as an
attempt to build a roof using plates instead of bricks.  I guess this is
Castle related, although my own preference is for Magic based castle
constructions, not historical.  I am also working on a sectional castle made
of white and black bricks, based on the ideas of Eric Kingsley

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than • just
    swapping arms and the like)
10: No, I have not.

Probably not relevant, but 36.

Fright Knights or original Forestmen

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)

Think so...

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

Own: 6040 Blacksmith -- but I like to modify it slightly, Not owned: 6067
Guarded Inn, but I have built a white tudor wall MOC of it -- it's sitting on
the kitchen table and my girlfriend has been whining about its presence
there...but of course, it ain't her place so she can stuff it!

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

6941 Blacktron Battrax

6.  What was your first castle set?

Probably 6022 Horse Cart when it came out.

50% castle, 40% pirate, the rest is probably space or SW -- and this is all a

    swapping arms and the like)
No. Never even swapped arms. Nor have I customized ANY Lego part whatsoever..

to do something that's been absent for a few months.  At Shiri's behest, I'm
gonna take a survey.  My first one, so bear with me.  OK, let's get started,
shall we?

1.  What is your age?
All previous respondents are younger than me (or at least those who were
willing to admit their age).

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?
As thin as it is, Wolfpack.

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)
No.  Been there, done that (well, I was a member of a shared world for about a
decade that produced about 1000 pages of storyline a year at its peak - you
don't want to get me started).  But I do check in on Castle World and enjoy
everyone's contributions.

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)
6080 is the set that I probably want the most.  Of those that I actually put
together, Stone Tower Bridge.  I have several hundred Castle minifigs, but not
a lot of actual Castle set yet.

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?
Black Seas Barracuda.

6.  What was your first castle set?
6057, Sea Serpent.

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)
25%.

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)
Captain Lance Boyle: Captain Redbeard with two legs, grey backpack, yellow
epaulettes, Johny Thunder head, Shako, and cutlass.

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?
Ummmmmm, errrrrrr, haven't yet.....

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
   swapping arms and the like)
The whole purpose of using Lego minifigs is so that I wouldn't have to strain
my pathetic eyes any further on close-up painting.  But I do plan on creating
inkjet printed body and shield stickers.

1.  What is your age?

37

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?

Wolfpack

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)

No. Will join when I start building MOCs

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

Hmm, I always hate picking favorites.

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

Hmm, I always hate picking favorites, but if absolutely arm twisted into
making a decision, 6277 Imperial Trading Post. Why? Pirates is my
favorit theme. The trading post is quite a nice little jon, and the
little merchant ship is very nice.

6.  What was your first castle set?

Probably was 6097 Nightlords Castle, but it could have been a Ninja or
other Fright Knights set.

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)

25%

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)

Again, I hate picking favorites.

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?

Hmmm, haven't really done any castle MOCing yet.

and...
10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
    swapping arms and the like)

Assuming this means painting or parts modification, I haven't done any
of this (yet - may never do it for castle [I have a plan for a
caver/miner figure which will require abusing a pharaoh's headdress]).

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

All the Star Wars line

6.  What was your first castle set?

677

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)

25% (just about everything else is Star Wars & Adventurers)

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)

Darth Vader, Chewbacca, my MOC musketeers, Death Star Troopers & jawas...

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?
and...

No pics, unfortunately, but I've built some goodies...

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just

I make custom shield & chest heralds from stickers I find while shopping.  I
always carry a shield in my pocket when I'm out, and compare it to stickers
wherever I find them - Target, party supply stores, record stores (band
stickers work really well).  If you just keep you eyes open, you can find
really good designs for excellent castle MOC armies.

10. Yes.

1- 27 in 13 more days... yay me...
2- Crusaders and Black Falcons
3- Yep, but it's taking me a rather long time to get my stories and models
together. =(
4- I really don't have a favorite, they're all so good. =)
5- See answer #4
6- Knights Procession way back in the day when I was a kid.
7- 50%
8- The basic Black Falcon guy, I suppose.
9- The coolest castle MOC I've built is more fantasy than historical.  I built
those mushroom houses that were at Brickfest and I'll be putting them into my
CW stories when I get the chance.  I've also built an airship that uses a lot
of technic parts, it was built for the fantasy CW world though, I really don't
know if it can be considered 'Castle'.
10- I haven't done anything too drastic to my castle minifigs, I'd be afraid I
would hurt them and they wouldn't forgive me. =)

Yep, that was mine too. =)  I built that the night before Brickfest and I was
really hurting for brown 1x1 cylinders, 1x2 and 1x4 brown 'log' bricks so I
had to run over to a friend's house and borrow a few. =)  I'm glad I have nice

1.  What is your age?

26

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?

I'd have to say Forestmen, although it's mostly for MOC potential.

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?

Nope.

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

Hmmm.  That I own? Probably 6090 Royal Knight's Castle, although some smaller
ones are pretty nice, too.

That I don't?  Definitely 6086, Black Knight's Castle.

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

Ummm.  Well, that's a prety big area.  I'll go with 2140 ANWB Roadside
Assistance Crew.

6.  What was your first castle set?

Gah.  I have no idea.  Sorry.

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)

Err, I'll go with 15-20%

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)

Princess Storm kinda kicks booty, but you just can't beat the Black Knight (as
seen in 6009 Black Knight).

Non-Castle, Darth Vader is pretty cool.

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?

Err, I did once build a really big castle from all my Lego when I was young.
It was both large and intricate, although I have no pictures or anything, so
you'll have to take my word on it.  I will say that while originally the walls
were solid red, this kinda fell by the wayside when I ran out of red bricks.

10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes?

If you mean taking a knife or paint to them, no.  I've only done this once and
I probably won't again, if I can help it.

Hey,

1.  What is your age? • 27 (but a rousing 12 in my mind.
2.  What castle subtheme do you like most? • Crusaders, forestmen
3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!) • I don't have a website (or any castle thing build for that matter)
4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)
6009 the Black Knight
No own- Any big castle, I have none of them. Sad isn't it.
5.  What's your favorite non-castle set? • All of em! Except for those new town sets...eeewwww.
6.  What was your first castle set? • I think it was Black Falcons Fortress, or the original black catapult
7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate) • 20%
8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC) • The Green Knight (MOC)
9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?
I built a big mountain for my King's Mountain Fortress, it was three feet by
three feet square and capped off at two and a half feet. I had easily a foot to
go when the lego ran out. It took nearly a third of my room, so I leveled it.
The next one was a large castle, which was leveled in a seige. The picture I
took didn't come out. (I left the lens cap on. Even sadder)
and...
10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just

Yeah, like alot. Almost to the point of being truly warped. I will post them
someday soon.

All have a warm fuzzy day.

Just for laughs, I totaled up the answers.  Broad answers ("pre-DM") were
ignored as too vague, "ranked in order" only counted the first, split answers
got a percentage of 1 vote.  I did not try to interpret if Dark Forest and
Forestmen should be lumped together or if Black Falcons and Black Knights
should be either (I still don't perceive the difference between the last two).

Forestmen: 4.41
Wolfpack: 4.25
Black Knights: 3.58
Black Falcons: 2.83
Fright Knights: 2.5
Crusaders: 2.16
Dragon Masters: 2.08
Royal Knights: 1
Dark Forest: .66
Ninja: .5

No Royal Knights II (Knights Kingdom) or Bulls.  No pre-crusaders classic
castle.

IMO, I'd say that Dark Forest and Forestmen lump together, but Black Falcons
and Black Knights do not.  Look at the shields.  I dunno if that's a very
accurate way of doing it, but FM and DF both have the same style shield, and
BF do not have the same design as BK.  If anything, I'd say BK have closer
ties to DM; perhaps the Dragon Masters were an attempted revival of the
series, with a fresh look.  My 2 cents.

Idunno.  I like the minifigs a little better in the Dark Forest series better
than the Forestmen, but I suppose they are nothing more than Forestmen II.

Was there a series actually called "Black Falcons"?  Black Falcon's fortress,
but then again, the 6011 Black Knight's Treasure is a Black Falcon.  Several of
the Black Knights sets include Black Falcons, and clearly not as "included
opposition".  The two big Black Knights sets don't include any Black Falcons.
I just don't truly see where one stops and the other starts.  Only as time goes
on do we see Lego narrowing down shield patterns to just one for a specific
faction.  Anyway, it looks to me like the specific series "Black Knights" is an
outgrowth of the earlier sets one might refer to as Black Falcons, but that in
fact, don't have any kind of official name.  If someone has more definitive
info, I'd be curious.

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

Black Monarch's Castle, Skeleton Surprise, Guarded Inn

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

725 Basic set

6.  What was your first castle set?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
My own personal answer sheet:
1) 23.
2) Forestmen.
3) Will be as soon as I get a better camera!
4) Forgive my set-number ignorance - the first Lionmen castle from 1984ish,
the Forestmen's secret cave from 1989ish, and the new Defence Archer.
5) Flip a coin between the Snowspeeder and the Speeder Bikes.
6) The Black Eagle Catapult from 1984ish.
7) About 25% of my sets, although around 40% of my figs are Castle-compatible.
8) So many to choose from: official figure would have to be either Tatooine
Luke or the Defence Archer figure; MOC would be either mysterious cat-burglar
and Royalist, Nemo (Endor Luke torso, black legs, black arms and hands, Darth
Maul cape and hood, red-haired Rock Raider head), or treacherous Elven Prince
Regent, Callid (Tatooine Luke torso, white belt and green legs, white
epaulets, black plastic cape, black bandana, orange-haired Rock Raider head).
9) A three-storey castle with pneumatic drawbridge, electric waterwheel, and
lighty-up eyes on the Dragonhead gargoyle... although this will eventually be
surpassed by the medieval village I've just started.
10) Never to the extent of minifig mutilation, but I have added non-Lego
pieces on occasion.

Well, actually.  I, um... well I disposed of him a while back.  But you see,
he has crept into my computer through an emmulator I downloaded,  so I have to
be reeeeal careful, you see.  He came back and we don't have the strength to
face him yet.  Wish us luck and see you at the Adventurers Guild!

Okay..I guess I have to get in on this after putting it off for a few weeks
now.. I mailed Craig a while back inquiring about CW (a few months) and
haven't done any Castle building but I've started working on figs. A few
Next few months... really...

to do something that's been absent for a few months.  At Shiri's behest, I'm

1.  What is your age?

27

2.  What castle subtheme do you like most?

Forestmen

3.  Are you a member of Castle World?  (if not, what are you waiting for?!)

N'yet - my wife wants me to help her build a story though. (soon.. HOW soon?)

4.  What's your favorite castle set? (both that you own and not)

6067 Guarded Inn (Owned)
6086 (kings mountain fortress? I forget the name) (unowned)
I love the Bavarian wall pieces and didn't look at 6086 in the store close
enough to realize it had 2 in yellow.. *rassin' frassin' double rassin'...*

5.  What's your favorite non-castle set?

Bah. just one? Owned would be 483 - Alpha 1 Rocket base 'cause it was the
first "Legoland" set I ever got as a kid.

Main Street and the Public Works Center sets of the early 80's still have to
be two high fav's on my list that I never was able to get.

6.  What was your first castle set?

6022 - whatever the name is..little armor cart with 2 guys and a "real" horse!

7.  What % of your collection is from castle sets? (rough estimate)

40% - thanks to Adventurers and Starwars...used to be 60%.. :) *8|

8.  What's your favorite minifig (castle or otherwise; MOC)

I can't pick just one..four maybe?

standard non Castle: Chewbacca! (What a wookie! Brrrwaaarr!)

Castle: Princess Storm -- she has red hair - I can't help myself...
Red Scale mail armored guards from Black Monarch's Castle.
        Perfect Royal guards!

Custom: Female RR head, open faced dark grey RR helmet with Blacktron black
visor on Blacktron body and UFO Dark Grey shoulder armor with dk grey hands.

(She's the pilot of my impending MOC Space themed fighter *crosses fingers for
the final completion to be stable and as flimsey as construction* It looked so
good on paper...)

9.  What's the largest/coolest/most intricate castle MOC you've ever built?

Combination/Variation of Black Monarch's and Black Falcon's castles meets
Royal Knights 6090 with the Guarded Inn and armor shop thrown in vs the Elves
(Forestmen).

It sounds better in words than it probably was but it was great at the time!
Nothing like the full blown MOC's of CW and others here. I've much to aspire
to!

and...
10. Have you ever customized a figure for castle purposes? (other than just
   swapping arms and the like)

Well... removing that pesky mic from a RR girl is about it.... weapons a few
times.. but no painting/cutting on my Lego in general.
