Vintage train part identification

I got this part in a big lot of train bits.

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=109497

I tried looking it up on Partsref and Peeron with no luck. It doesn't even
have a part #. The only reference it has on it is 2-01 on the bottom (unless
that is the #, but I tried it also no luck). Anyone know? I ass-umed it was
from a train 'cause everything else in the lot was. It had 2 4.5 motors in
with the lot.

Maybe Ben B. knows what it is... but to me there wasn't enough there to work
with. Can you post a somewhat bigger pic and maybe a pic of the other side?
Are those studs on the inside or what?

Thanks!

Yes. I even have some of those parts, but not in yellow. D'oh.

Note... this set has not just a one piece vehicle base ala Town Jr., but the
wheels are permanently attached to it. That would elicit howls of rage
today, I expect...

But I love Fabuland anyway.

I'm already at work, I hope I can splain it to you. 4 x 6 rows of studs on
the inside. 1 studs width all the way around that is flat like a tile, then
the 1 brick high sides. The underside is just like a regular plate. The
whole thing is 6 x 8. No seams or anything, it is all 1 piece.

See Ben's reply, I think he nailed it... he's identifying it as a Fabuland
truck body. Your description fits that part. (I  have (well, Taya has) some
in other colors, (but not yellow) thanks to my good friend Mike Collins in
Ipswich, UK who gave us some.)

Ah phooey, I was trying to do 2 things at once, it was a Fabuland piece like
Ben said. I just got post happy. I'll take a look over on the set database
to try to date and reference the other train/Fabuland parts I don't know in
this lot. This gives me a better starting point to finding the info I want.
Big ups to both of you.

Ben B. and Larry P. are both timely and correct.

Sybrand Bonsma has an Unofficial Fabuland Homepage.
http://members.tripod.com/%7ESybrand_Bonsma/fabu1eng.html

It is the absolute best place to go to research anything having to do with
Fabuland or suspected of being Fabuland.

You will find a inventory of all known Fabuland elements here- WITH PICTURES!
http://members.tripod.com/~Sybrand_Bonsma/fabuland/pages/inventory/partspic.html
Under each picture, Sybrand lists all the Fabuland sets each element is in.
The part you show in your picture at Brickshelf is listed as
EJ5     6x8x1 square box        red:  3680  yellow: 3634[1980 vintage!]
A related part is
EJ4     6x6x1 square box       yellow: 3627       white:  3637
                               blue:   3639 (3643)red:    3641, 3670

Sounds like you got some great "bits"... Fabuland and Train. Enjoy.

regards,
sheree

ps Larry thanks for the crosspost to lugnet.fabuland .    [I haven't been
able to keep up with my  lugnet.train reading recently ... I would have
missed this.]
