I was planning to release some custom craftmans kits for the Metroliner. But
now with the pending release of the Legend version, I'm not sure it will
generate more or less of a demand. Certainly the pricing from what I had in
mind will be lower.
The cars/wagons I had in mind were a 2nd class coach, a dining car, a sleeper
car, and a RPO/combination coach car.
Currently, the production are 80-90% done and release can be a month away. The
kits uses all new parts and has somewhere between 200-250 pieces each. Some
details differences are the use of stickers for the doors and plain bricks
instead of grille bricks for the diaphragm, otherwise the parts are faithful to
the original with the two tone roof, wagon plates, windows, etc.
Now the question is, would anyone be interested in these kits if they were made
available? and if so, what would be the price you expect the kits to cost?
Thanks

Now that I will be able to purchase the Metroliner at a reasonable price, I
am interested in your custom add on kits. So the new releases make your kits
even more attractive to someone like me. I could see purchasing one of each
for Christmas if the quality/price is reasonable.
I just purchased a BricWorx 801 Chessie Diesel Engine. Part of the reason
I did this is to support a custom building cottage industry like your
possible venture. I don't have a model train background and I don't have the
time, parts or knowledge yet to do a great job of customizing. I appreciate
innovative craftsmanship and am willing to support quality work with purchases.
Good luck,

Cool, I would buy some, if only to support the industry (and maybe scope out
the competition a little ;-) ). I bought a Bricworx coach even though it's
not really my cup of tea, and I have a Chessie from way way back when Steve
was selling them assembled, without any instructions, with the decals
already applied.

I probably wouldn't buy one myself (being one who likes to roll his own
-) ) but I think the re-release of the Metroliner will make the market for
add-on cars much better. Go for it, Steve!

I'd probably be interested in all of them, as I was working on a 25-car Metroliner
(I'd split it into 2 trains normally), and wanted a variety of cars.
Depending on the design, I'd probably pay up to $40. And if you could leave out
some bricks for some that I had (I'm sure I have black corrugated bricks around
here SOMEWHERE) to reduce cost a bit, that would be even better. If not, no big
deal.

Sounds like a good idea. It is hard to tell what the demand will be without
seeing them or knowing the price. When do you plan to share them with us?

I wish to thank everyone for their support and comments. It looks like there
is enough interest and encouragement to proceed.
Preview of the kits are at
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=5608. The prototype pictures
do not show the application of the stripe stickers. They also include detail
interiors, but no minifigs.
However, I'm not encouraged at the pricing. Buying the parts alone, from
Brickbay at the average selling price would run around $75-$80. Other 200+
piece kits from artistians would put it in the similar ballpark price of
$60-$80. While I have not set prices, these are some guidelines and the fact a
10001 has most of the parts to build two of the cars.
Stay tune for announcement of availablity and pricing.

Great sets! I think that paying $80 for each would be fair, considering the
expense of parts and the labor in stickers,design,packaging,ect.-Harvey

Hey, where do you plan on getting all those sliding gray doors, and the black
and gray rail pieces? Have I missed something lately? Are those parts easier to
come by than I remember?

The third one (http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=56065) is
very similar to a car I built for my Black and White Metroliner clone. My
version is on the left end of the train in this picture:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=50696
I used the Type 1 sliding door in mine (http://img.lugnet.com/ld/4511.gif).

I have four kits on the market (Carolina Train Builders -
http://www.nclug.net/ctb) and you are right on about pricing. Because you
have to buy from the secondary market it will be tough to price cars like
your at a price point below $50. Unless you can get 10001 and/or 10002 at
discount prices I think you'll find that you'll have to be in the $75 price
range to make it worth your while.

Love the RPO and sleeper car (which looks a lot like 7815 from what I can
see... coincidence?) I think about $75 would be a fair price, IF you added
some nice instructions.
Still don't understand LEGO doesn't do anything like this... they did back
in the 12v era (look at 7815, 7819 and 7820 ... awesome models!) A train
with only 1 or 2 cars just doesn't look right.

This is great news. I own a original Metroliner since 1992, and I would buy
custom additional cars for $70-$75.

The gray rails are found in 1351 movie backdrop and 6096 Bull's attack.
The hardest parts to find new are the sliding doors. Anyone who is willing to
sell/trade, contact me.
The RPO will be extremely limited, because of the doors.

I like the look of the RPO/combination coach car for sure. How about a
modern Amtrak style Material Handling Car (without sliding doors if the
price would be prohibitive)? Now that would be great. I would really
consider buying at least one of those - maybe in the $60 to $65 range
(again, with no opening loading doors!).
What I really would like is a set of Maintenance of Way cars like a ballast
spreader, tie crane, flanger, spike puller, bunk car, etc.!!

Thanks, Bob, for the resource pointers. I added it all to the FAQ here:

By the way, I haven't gotten a lot of feedback on the Train FAQ. If you
have a minute, please take a look at it, and let me know how to make it

I'd suggest the standard places... NMRA, TrainWeb, plus try a search for
"Jordan Spreader" and "Flanger" on Google.
Is there a big interest in these sorts of models? They tend to be smallish.
They're on my list of things to think about though..

In addition to the sets that have already been mentioned, there is a very
clear picture of 10015 on the back of the 10013 box that shows that it will
have six of the 1x8 plates with rails in black. Also, from the picture, it
appears that the glass in the 1x2x3 green train windows will be trans light
blue like the plane windows in the caboose.

Small, so they get fairly complicated, end up being fairly expensive... An
undecorated HO scale Tamper track alignment buggy costs $42!
Josh
P.S. I'd buy any custom kits of MOW equip...

shh!!! That's my current project.(1) ;) Some of you have seen my
crane, the wheel car and a few gondolas. I have an almost done tool
car. I've got a design for the tie crane and a tamper. I was hoping to
have the whole MOW train done for brickfest but that didn't happen.

Personally, I wasn't all that interested in these until I saw a few orange
ones in person. They were really quite interesting looking. I snapped off a
few pics that I am still trying to post on Brickshelf if I can get time. I
am really curious to find out what they actually are!

The Train FAQ looks good! One thing though - now that the Metroliner and
Club car are coming out, you would probably want to update the section about
how to buy older train sets (i.e. tell about the train re-releases coming
from S@H). Then there's the info about My Own Train and the all the new
train cars coming out (was that on there and I just missed it?).
