| Hello I'm writing from brickswest and here is something that the Sr. VP of
LEGODIRECT told us during the Q&A we had with him yesterday when he
introduced the 10020 and left it there for us to play with. It's still at
brickswest right now. I'll have all the transcipts of the Q&A session later
next week.
There will be 10,000 made only. Each engine will come with it's own number
1x2 title (beginning with 1,2... 10,000). The 1st first five ARE NOT
AVALIBALE FOR PURCHASE as they were taken out of the production run and will
be given away by lego as promos/contest,etc... (More on this later once I
get the transcript of the VP Q&A done). Numbers 6 - 10,000 will be sold via
LEGO Direct (website, phone, etc). IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU ORDER EARLY OR
LATE. THE ENGINE YOU GET WILL HAVE A RANDOM NUMBER FROM 6 - 10,000. I
REPEAT THE ENGINES WILL BE SHIPPED IN RANDOM ORDER!!!! I REPEAT THE ENGINES
WILL BE SHIPPED IN RANDOM ORDER. Also the engine does not come with a motor
so that will be a separate buy. No modifications are needed to put in the
motor just remove the boggie and put the motor in. The neat item is that
the side panels that are put on the motor/boggies are usually black. In
this engnine both front/back bogies have grey pieces. YES GREY PIECES.
Also the engine comes with STICKERS for the text of the bricks.
Stay tune for more -AHui

Aha!
This is the important bit for me. Did the hint mention 8-wide-compatibility
or just "new curved track" all alone?

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | BTW The santa fe that lego brough to show us WAS GIVEN away as a prize at
the last minute. It was number 84,???. I think. As for the curved track
the word was that new track geometry is being worked on and will be coming
soon in the curves. The comments on the 8-wide is "We will not rule
anything out" and "no comment, but don't expect it anytime soon."
According to the VP 8-wide is NOT a high priority item to them right now.
More on this later this week once I have the transcipt of the Q&A sesison done.

Yes BUT they already HAVE an 8 wide set... the tanker. :-)

which in fact has no problems with the actual curve radius. Stay 6 or 7-w and
you don't need new curves. I want big train wheels and red wheel blocks now...
(But to be honest: I've already got more news to buy in 2002 than I ever had
expected).

Well, we've had this debate before. I want big wheels too. But the curves
need fixing. We need two radii so that parallel tracks look better. We need
the turnout/switch geometry fixed so you can do a proper diverge and a
proper crossover. We need shorter straight segments to make odd layouts work
correctly.
I had always believed that we were unlikely to get these things due to the
very high tooling costs (they'd rather spend their tooling dollars on things
like the rock raiders one piece large vehicle base).
If rumors/VPs are now in effect saying "wait... we're working on it" instead
of "ain't gonna happen any time soon, market isn't big enough" that is huge
news. News of success.

Agree. Only in my priority list it's quite far down.

Some lines above the curve radius.

YES! Maybe this would be even my number one wish.

Again: this is really great news. If they are going to work on new curves, new
short track sections might follow as next.

Ben
(I think TLC should be somewhat more systematic in developing new parts: I'm
waiting for a corner brick for the rounded roof part. And I need the double
sloped roof brick in 75° for inner corners - there are dozens of such none
existing parts that would fill blank areas in a systematic parts reference
table).

This has been mentioned before, but don't forget that short straights are easy
to make, and quite functional.

If you're willing to cut up long straights, that is. I'd prefer to get them
from Lego(r).

Not to start another 6 vs. 8 wide debate, but I hope Lego Direct
concentrates on the continued revival of the six wide, 9 volt train line and
expanding the bulk parts line parts instead of producing 8 wide trains. I
would much rather pay for a new and improved track system (automated
points!) instead of 8 wide rolling stock...
Here is a question for the Bricksmiths and others experienced in selling
custom sets... How much would the Sante Fe cost if it were produced at 8
studs across? It would obviously require more bricks. +10%? +20%?

I feel that it's not just width, you have to increase length a fair bit and
height a small bit when you go to 8 wide, so I would argue that the brick
increase is anywhere from 30% to 100%, tending toward the higher of that range.
J2 disagrees, he thinks it's less... that highlights that it's really a
matter of opinion as I don't think anyone has done a real crisp study of two
models that everyone agrees are "the same".
But I would doubt that anyone would think it's only 10% more bricks... (even
accounting for the fact that things are hollow.)

Sounds like a good project for someone. J2, how about an 8-wide version of
the new Super Chief? Are you up to the challenge?

Don't forget that automated points probably won't come cheap. In olden (12v)
days, a single automated point cost as much as two manual ones. Will there be a
market for a single $30 automated point? A layout gets pricey quick!

I'd be willing to pay for that (and my layout has 14 points!). Besides all
Lego really has to invest in to get a DCC solution started is DCC compatible
engine motors and points. I think everything else would be able to be
bought off the shelf. A DCC relay switch to control power to other Lego
motors would be nice though.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Keep dreaming about DDC... LEGO is NOT going to do that anytime soon.
Directs prioroty it is show more people that LEGO makes trains. From the
expression on his (Brad) face the idea of investing in creating new molds
and looking at DDC is not going to happen. Not that LEGO may or may not
want to do it but direct has only been aorund 2 years and while it is
sucessufl you need to remembert that they are the babies of the 12 sections
of lego. So they need to prove to the other 11 that look trains is going
real real good now it's time we invest in it. Direct is NOt at that point
yet and can't get there without us prompting the lego trains and train shows
like so many of you have.
What I think you help out is having an internet connection at the trainshops
next to the lego layouts so tat we kids and parnets ask where can I buy
them. BAB! They use the internet right next to the layout and it's a done
deal. hum.... Something to ask lego about?

Sad, but i'm working on a kit to do so.
If you still see Mr.Brad Justus, can you ask him when we will get our bulk
discount in Europe too?
I mailed Shop At Home Europe, and they replied with the message that there
aren't plans to do it. I, and some others are waiting for it before placing
a new order!
The Super Chief looks very nice. Well done from Lego.

| Price point taken, yes, they would be expensive in the individual packs like
7858 & 7859. Speaking as a former 12V user, there was that nice little
add-on called 7863. When I bought my system in 1985 (great year for
American Dollar) in Europe, I bought a pair of the 2 pack manual switches,
7856, and later ordered 7863's from Magasin Du Nord (you think Pitsco/Dacta
is pricey!).
TLG could do the same w/ a 9V version, just offer an accessory pack for
those who want it. (Except it would be in North America market too!)

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Two more things on this topic and then I'm going to post the transcript of
the Q&A.
1) The train engine that was given as a goft was number: A8841.
2) Train engines 1 - 5 will be auctioned off on eBay.com by LEGO in the
future. This is something new they want to start and will do several items
(train and non-trains) and see how it goes.
3) The Santa Fee comes with 2 side windows on each side. There will be some
sort of 'service/expansion' pack to give the engine the 3 window port like
the real ones. Read more about this on the transcipt.

Well, they'd better hurry it up. Santa Fe engines are already appearing on
eBay.

| There is enough engines for everyone to get 1 or 2. Besides the VP said
"It's a series of 10,000. We run out of the numbered ones at 10,000." He
laters says that if they need more they will make more (most likely without
the number).
Also on the ebay site. That person doesn't even know what number the engine
in the box is. It's not 1,2,3,4,5 or A8841. Also I don't know if a
certifiate comes with the engine. I did not pick that bit up at brickswest.
So it's STUPID to get the engine on ebay if you don't know the number!

My emphasis on "only."
Can anyone shed some light on which is accurate. If the former, then I will

can afford to wait a little.

On the question of 10,000. This is what he said.
Question 39: How limied (on train engine) is limited?
Answer: "It's a seriesm of 10,000. We run out of the numbered ones at

From my understand of this I'm taking it that if the demand for engines

'batch' MAY NOT be numbered! Anyone else at brickswest want to comment on
this. -AHui

I understood it as Mark did. Personally, after 10,000, I rather see a
*different* engine run of 10,000 and have the Super Chief go out of production
for a while (based on the fact that LD can only have so many different sets in
production at any given time)

The sooner a LEGO Direct item becomes unavailable, the sooner that item
begins to show up on eBay at inflated prices. Isn't that one of the things
LEGO Direct was supposed to help stop?
I am personally against any sort of 'Limited Edition' products. They only
reward people with immediate buying power and don't always end up with true
fans. I believe in the long run the company would do well to keep this
terrific set in production as long as possible. It is a good ambassador for
their products and their image.
I'm not a train fan in the least, but I'll be buying one of these sets for
my desk at work.
> (based on the fact that LD can only have so many different sets in
> production at any given time)
If the sales for this division continue to be strong, I suspect this
artificial limit of how many sets they can release could be raised or
eliminated.

| i agree with this sentiment. in my mind limited edition in the case of the
super chief is a short production run of 10,000 and NO MORE. what's the
point of having a LIMITED EDITION if only a second run is going to be made
with the only difference being a numbered tile?!?!

Personally, I don't think 10000 is all that limited. I mean, even after
Larry's placed his order[1] there'll still be plenty to go around. What
production run would you expect of a set like this?
I'm not a huge fan of forced 'collectibility', but clearly I've fallen hook,
line, sinker, rod and copy of 'Angling Times' for this one. I'd rather Lego
Direct just kept producing fantastic sets at great prices. I can put up
with the marketing machinery for a while, but this could get tiresome if
they come to rely on limited editions - particularly if a more limited run
is ever used as an excuse to hike the price up.
Still, let's have a decent British steam locomotive next, eh?

He said "Decent" not "Cute"... every club should have a Thomas(tm) but that
doesn't mean I want LEGO(r) to dump effort into licensing it.
Na, give us an A4 Mallard(1) (think of the compound curved pieces for that
one!!!)
1 - check me on that, I think that's what it is. Big, Blue, Streamlined,
Fast, Between the Wars period...

Yep, you got it. Class is A4, a Pacific (4-6-2) wheel arrangement, Mallard
was the engine which took the world steam speed record of 126 mph in in 1938
IIRC. Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the LNER.

Thanks for confirming my memory. Now for the real test: Someone built a
LEGO(r) model of it some time back? For 50 points, who can give the URL(s)
to the builder's pics???

[Slowly raises hand] It was a long time ago, okay? Over a year and a half.
I didn't have any track or 9V wheels either:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.j.railton/mallard/index.html
And Larry knows this because he was there. Look on the link to Huw's
photos. All the effort went into the walking AT-AT at the time (see my
Space section).
But yes, I'd love to see Lego Direct do a nice big version of this. They
could leave the fairings off if they wanted to - many of these ran from
day-to-day without them. But, big train wheels, lots of curves. It would
be great.

I only see one listing:

A pathetic listing, and no picture?

They might've taken a punt, and listed before receiving the goods. They
could've at least grabbed a pic from the LEGO site, though.

From the pictures here (thanks Rosco):
http://www.midwestnpioneer.org/timetable/fallenflags/superchief.html
The A unit has the 2 windows, but you would need the expansion pack to build
the B unit, along with grey motor sides etc. Any hints on what the
expansion pack includes?
