Angel Sculpture

The Angel sculpture is a lego replica of a resin cast of an Italian sculpture. The scans of the resin cast were performed by the Stanford graphics laboratory. Their final mesh is available from the Stanford 3D Scanning Repository.

I built two versions of the Angel sculpture. The smaller one was designed to fit entirely within a gray 48x48 baseplate. The large version was designed such that the base completely fit within a gray 48x48 baseplate.

The larger version won the award for Best Sculpture at BrickFest2005. There was a cool article that mentioned me (with a photo) in Wired magazine. There is a write-up of the win in BrickJournal Issue 3 (pages 68-69).

Transporting the unglued sculpture from Seattle Washington to Washington D.C. was a bit tricky. I ended up using the Instapak Quick foam system from Sealed Air. I broke the sculpture into 7 pieces: the base, the torso, the head, two hands, and two wings. These were shipped UPS in four separate packages. The cost of shipping it across the country was roughly the same as the material cost for the sculpture. I left the sculpture in Washington D.C. since I couldn’t justify the cost of shipping it home.

The plans for the sculpture won the LDraw December 2005 Model of the Month award.

Complete plans for both the large and small angel are available on Brickshelf.
