Boston & Maine Caboose

After completing my Boston & Maine GP9 locomotive I decided I needed a caboose to go with it.

The prototype came from a book I have called Before Guilford by Preston Cook which details approximately the last 10 years of The Delaware & Hudson, Boston & Maine, and Maine Central Railroads. The book deals mostly with the motive power of the lines but there are a few other shots of equipment as well including cabooses. A lot of inspiration for building a caboose with LEGO was taken from Larry Pieniazek’s Caboose Page. There are some obvious similarities between my caboose and Larry’s but there are some differences as well. For example my prototype did not have an extended Cupola. My caboose is also shorter and only uses 1x2x2 Classic windows, I tried using a basic 1x4x3 window as Larry did but I found it too big. I also made it so my doors would open.

Another note, The white windows on the cupola are not prototypical the prototype has black windows. I unfortunately have no 1x2x2 black classic windows at the moment so I comprimised just as I did with the engine and used a minor color from the paint scheme (White). I also used some 20+ year old white windows in the cupola of which only 3 still have their glass and the rest look pretty ratty. I will be replacing these as soon as I get around to placing an order with LEGO Direct.

Followups to lugnet.trains Well as promised I got some work done on a caboose to go with my Boston and Maine Locomotive. All the information about it is on the page so let me send you there.
