Time for you to do another Euro tour to discover that most Euro steamers
were black (German, most Belgium and French engines), dark green (Dutch,
some French too) or a very dark blueish (well there was the dutch NCS who
used bright yellow with brown trimmings... very stylish!)

British steam locos were nearly all colours other than black. The exeptions were
mainly goods (freight) locos and later in BR (nationalised) times
some examples
Caledonian Railway (as per Jason's loco)- Bright blue
LBSR London Brighton and South Coast - 'Improved engine green' (actually a
mustard yellow!)
Midland Railway - Mid to Dark red
GWR Great Western Railway - Dark Green
Southern Railway - Various shades of green at different times
LNER - Mainly black but also Blue as per Mallard various greens, and even grey
and silver

In contradiction to fairly common US practice (black loco with grey/silver
smokebox) most UK locos had a black smokebox whatever their colour. Wheels were
normally the same colour as the loco (unlike German and 12V lego practice of
having red wheels) and most engines had quite extravagant lining out, with
stripe/bands around the boiler and panels on the cabsides, splasher sides
tenders and sidetanks.
