The drive wheels are only connected to the chassis by couplings, the top is
"pressed on" the chassis by 2 springed wheels holders (the red ones). Over
curves and switches, they puch up slightly higher, and therefore don't run.
On straights, they run great. In my next (improved) version I'll connect the
rod end to a 9V motor, and have them actually be the driving force for the
engine, but I have to make additional modification to make them the sole
power source.

The rods are 1x6 technic plates, connected to technic minifigure feet. You
have to use alot of force to connect them (I broke a few in the process),
but it sometimes works. (I've had hairline (but almost invisible) cracks
form, but they connect solidly.
