Hello all,
This is the first time i have posted to Lego Trains and hope someone out
there can help me. I have recently purchased a very large tain set
consisting of 3 7740 sets 2 what appear to be red transport engines and
several cargo trains and my problem is the grey rubber wheel sleeves that
stop the train spining the ones on my trains are worn and i need to replace
them but cannot find them anywere, even Lego themselves no longer stock
them, can anyone help me with ideas on what i can use instead.
I THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE.

I think this might be in the FAQ... yes, here it is:

http://www.lugnet.com/~330/FAQ/Trains/tires

Cary has put a great deal of effort into this FAQ and I cannot speak highly
enough of its utility. It is a great place to see if your questions are
answered.

Anyway you do see the tires (wheel sleeves) come up for auction on eBay once
in a while.. but that way is spendy. Better to try using rubber bands or
rubber tubing slices or heatshrink or even... Playmobil spares which I am in
the process of getting copies of to see how well they work.

Good luck!

Another approach entirely is to convert the whole thing to 9V. But of course
that removes some of the charm, it is said.

(you may need to fix linewrapping, you may need to search in your own
country, not sure)

I cannot vouch for these as I have not received mine yet... but a club I'm
associated with ordered some and I should have some soon. I am not sure if
this is the right part or not.

Sorry if that's a bit vague.

As to heatshrink tubing, any well equipped hobbyist electronics place ought
to have some. In the US west, try Frys... they have everything. Elsewhere in
the US try Radio Shack, sometimes they have it.

No worries mate. Do update us on how you get on, I'm sure Cary would love to
add a bit to that FAQ entry.

Dear Craig,

I got a tip (see below) from Pascal Breard from France a few weeks ago. It's
about his experiences with bicycle tube and it sounded very interesing to me,
but I still have not tested it myself.

Kind Regards,

Ben

P.s.: Congrats! Getting 3x 7740 is like winning in a lottery

Takea bicycles inner tube ( the smaller one for race bicycle...), and cut it
every 4 mm...
It works very good, it's cheaper than lego belts, and works longer...

Here is the exact ref of the rubbers (inner tube of a bicycle tire), i have
used for my train :

HUTCHINSON 700x18-20-23 VF 53mm (course bicycle...)

Just a few notes about the playmobil tires.

They do fit around the large red wheels. (not the small ones on 7740) Sorry
for the confusion. I have fitted them on my 4-4-0 that uses these wheels and
they seem to work good. Maybe even to good, now my drivers spin well but
they keep on getting out of sync with each other.

Sorry for any confusion.

I been using the small white technic belts/rubber bands on the wheels of my

about 100 sets for $10.00 so a bargain, thanks again for all your help and
hope to post to trains again.
Take care.

Dear Craig,

I would be highly interested in your experiences with the bicycle tubes.

Please tell me: how exactely have you cut them in 4 mm rings with 90° angle?
(Knive or cicle? Is any further assistance needed?)

How is the running behaviour? Really the same as with the original Lego tyres?
Any problems? What about the dirt of the white powder?

I think these tubes might be perfect, but I would like to hear it from a third
party. (Pascal - who had the idea first - told it worked better than anything
else.)

Thanks!

Ben

Hi Ben,
I cut the tube with a small hobby knife just a razor blade with a handle
really, first few were a little bit wide but about but now are perfect, i
washed the tube first and removed the talc, only problem have had so far was
my train got up a bit to much speed and 1 front tire came half off and
caused a pile up on a corner but if train runs at normal speed no problems
as yet, left my train running for an hour no slippage at all.
Take care and have a top day.
Craig Roberts
