Has anyone sighted the new Thomas the Tank Engine sets:

* 3300 Harold the Helicopter
* 3301 Cargo-Loading Cranky

here in Oz?

My Thomas-loving nephew has his 4th birthday in a few weeks, so I'm hoping
to buy one of these sets for his birthday.

price) at k-mart chaddy.

No, not yet - I have been looking for them too.

I think they were supposed to be released this month.

Good news Kerry!  Harold is featured in the Target catalogue starting this
Thursday - 20% off Lego.  Hopefully Cranky will be there too.

Thanks. I checked my local Target and same story, Harold but no Cranky.
Still, Harold alone will make my nephew happy.

I can help you get a Cranky if you like. Let me know.

Well, the  3300 Harold the Helicopter turned out to be an absolute hit with
my Thomas-loving nephew (just turned 4).

It's got very high play-ability. For those of you not exposed to the world
of Thomas the Tank Engine, Harold the Helicopter is regularly called upon to
rescue engines that have de-railed or suffered one of the many railway
accidents that seem to occur on the Island of Sodor. So for the young child,
it is just one long game of Harold goes and picks up a train with his hook
(the stud connections are strong enough so that Harold can indeed lift up
Duplo trains) with a few Harold goes and picks up a person in his crate for
variety. Endless hours of fun for the child.

I also gave my niece (just 2) some of the Duplo Zoo sets with lots of
animals (which she also liked). One strange thing that I had not previously
realised is that the stub on the backs of some of the animals isn't the
normal size. We discovered this when Harold the Helicopter went to rescue a
zoo animal -- Harold can pick up trains with studs on top but not animals. I
wonder why it is not a normal Duplo sized stud? The popular items in the Zoo
sets are the monkeys which can hold onto the vine (and then the vine can be
madly swung about with the monkeys attached) and the crocodile with the
mouth that can be opened and closed from underneath. And, given that Steve
Irwin was very much in the news with his memorial service, it was
interesting that the children chose to call the female Duplo zookeeper
Bindi.

Still, no sign of Cranky the Crane, but hopefully he will be released for
Christmas. My nephew looked at the brochures in the box and saw Cranky and
immediately wanted him, so I figure it's a safe bet for a Christmas present
if it's available.

Last Christmas, I gave my nephew the Intelli-train Deluxe Set. Initially he
didn't seem to grasp the use of those "lozenges" on the track to control the
train, but I notice now that he understands and adds them to his layout.
Indeed, I think he would like to have more! He also noticed and pointed out
to me (and then I had to conduct experiments for myself) that filling the
fuel in the Intelli-Train sometimes takes a different number of "gurgles" to
"fill" the train. I don't know exactly what it is doing, but it seems that
that the number of gurgles to fill the train does relate to how long since
you last refueled. There is a minimum of 2 gurgles it seems, but it can go a
lot higher. So there is some quite subtle behaviour here.

I just had to wander across to The Bunk's Duplo pile and check this out. As I'm
doing this I stated loudly what I was up to and the NLSO informed me that she
had informed me of such an occurrence ages ago. I could see where this was
heading in regards to marital communication topics. I advised that any future
comments regarding LEGO company products be communicated in the form of a lugnet
post, so as to ensure a timely and appropriate response.
Anyway.....where was I ? Yes a Duplo man can sit on a leopard's back, but cannot
stand on the leopard's back. A 2 x 2 Duplo brick can be centred on a leopard's
back by inserting the back-stud into the centre-tube. Hmmm...

Hey, Kerry, for the next level of play-ability for Harold, try this:

Drill a hole through the propellor pin, splice a 9 volt battery to a LEGO wire, attach a LEGO motor, and away you go! (A big hit at train shows:-)

Saw multiple copies of this set at the Melbourne Myer city store. Check the
brisbane equivilant (i think they are grace bros). If you can not source one
locally, I may be able to swing by and grab you one.

3301 Cargo-Loading Cranky (the crane) is now available in Big-W here in
Brisbane, so my Thomas-loving nephew will be a happy boy at Christmas.

Found him in Target and later Big W a couple of weeks ago, sorry I should have
mentioned it but wrongly thought you already had one!

The one I bought doesn't have the green stripes printed on the two grey bricks
at the top, would be interested to know if this is just my set or a fault with
them all.  Haven't bothered contacting Lego about it.

Kerry,

Can you give me an idea of how old your nephew is. I have been keeping the
multi-color "jewels" away from my daughter out of fear they would get misplaced
before she realized they were used for somthing more than teething. (As you know
they are not easy to replace.) I would like to have a better idea of when to dig
them out. Thanks. (Sorry for butting into your .local thread.)

My nephew was 3 years 4 months when I gave him the Intelli-train set. At
that stage he was interested that the train stopped, reversed etc and seemed
to understand that the coloured lozenges (for want of a better name) caused
these behaviours. However, he did not play with the lozenges or move them to
other parts of the track -- he was entertained by them but did not engage
with them. However, at his 4th birthday, he was still needing assistance to
build the whole track but was actively placing the lozenges and definitely
knew which ones caused which behaviours.
