I have finally built what I believe is the closest design of a LEGO Thomas one can build compared to the original Thomas, given the current parts available (save the Thomas face I used, which would need to be a new part, but which I included for effect:-)

Some notes:
  • wheels would need to be created in blue, as would the R2-head superheater on Thomas’ boiler.

  • 1x2x2 thin walls could be printed with circle windows for added effect.

  • few more pics HERE
There are a few other minor details that could be improved, but basically, here it is TLC! So let’s get that Thomas license nailed down, and let’s fire up that mold(s) for those drivers wheels, because I know many people would like to see them come out in other colors as well!

IMHO I like mine better...

No offense... After all opinions are like noses or some other body part... I like the 8-wide as the proportions work out better. I realize the wheels look to small but this one is 100% Lego Except for the face paint and soon to follow #1 decal.

If Lego was to make a 6 wide I think they designed the motor to accept a side decoration with a dead center wheel. At least the indentation is in the right spot and the measurements work out perfect.

It’s all academic anyway as tomorrow or the next day someone will build a better one and if you’ve ever worked with the Thomas people you’d know that the odds of Lego working out a deal with then are slim and none. -Ken

Vital body part;-)

I like the 8-wide as the proportions work out better.

Well, you are preaching to the choir here when you talk about 8 wide:-) Actually, I have a half-finished Thomas that is 10 wide that utilizes BBB wheels-- I’m waiting for Ben to mold them in blue!

I realize the wheels look to small but this one is 100% Lego Except for the face paint and soon to follow #1 decal.

Just so you know-- those red wheels on my Thomas are also LEGO; my only non-LEGO part is the face...

If Lego was to make a 6 wide I think they designed the motor to accept a side decoration with a dead center wheel. At least the indentation is in the right spot and the measurements work out perfect.

Hard to say whether they’d design him with a motor or not. I would think “no”, because a motor automatically tacks $25 onto the price of the set. My version could probably meet a $19.99 price point pretty easily.

It’s all academic anyway as tomorrow or the next day someone will build a better one and if you’ve ever worked with the Thomas people you’d know that the odds of Lego working out a deal with then are slim and none.

Really? From the looks of the marketplace, it appears to me that Thomas is virtually ubiquitous and that licensing wouldn’t be a problem at all.

From our (NILTC) work with them and having talked to Ill Railway Museum officials about their Thomas show the group that holds the licence is VERY difficult to work with. One would think with the money problems Lego is having that they have better things to do. But then they never do what I think is right anyway so who knows...

Perhaps it could be a trans panel with the non-window bit printed, similar to the portholes on the Santa Fe.

That would be AWESOME! (though almost too much to wish for:-)

(BTW, I forgot to add to the list that the whistle (binoculars) would need to be gold:-)
