Gareths Abode
Gareths Abode - A Tour
Hope you enjoyed the tour! Back to the main Gareths Abode page Gareths Abode - Accessibility One of the wonderful majick effects of Gareths Abode is that it has the ability to open up. Gareth loved this power and used it mostly for his own enjoyment, as well as to amuse giants who came by for a visit, and give them the illusion they were staring at a play-house with little miniature figures. What a joker...
Back to the main Gareths Abode page Gareths Abode - Details Gareth has had hundreds of years spent not only on the study of majick, but also on the design and the beauty of the building. The first thing visible to someone approaching from afar - after the Tower, of course - is the fountain in the front of the house. In the next picture you can see Gareths ingredient and potions table, and the Wheel decour. Each stone represents one of the six fields. (The orange trans. dot should be pink, unfortunately a pink one doesnt exist). Here, the entrance to the Abode is visible. Two yellow bird statues - or are they only statues? - are perched in the center, with two dragon arms positioned strategically underneath them. This table has been mostly empty for the past eight hundred to nine hundred years. Only Gareth ate here during that time period, with occasional visitors. He commented he was always wondering if snow white would show up and think this was the dwarves house (being seven chairs and all, yknow). But since the calling the table has been populated. Only the yellow chair remained empty... Windows line the building; Gareth favors sunlight over articficial light or darkness. The top of the building is lined with ten evenly spaced windows purchased by a helpful merchant years ago. Gareth recalled that the merchants name was Dye Rect, or something of the sort. An ancient rune inscribed along the Eastern wall was placed there per Gareths request. Apparently, the word bears significance regarding Gareths power. Two side views of the first floor from the west. The architect of the building signed her initial in the same ancient language in which the rune is inscribed in. Back to the main Gareths Abode page Gareths Abode - The Library The Library is a work of years, and Gareths own pride and joy. Mostly written in his own handwriting, these books contain Gareths own discoveries. The five apprentices added to their five corresponding books as they started making their own discoveries. The library has no doors, and can only be entered with majick. During their first year, the five apprentices had to come up with different ways of entering it. Walls were evaporating, people transporting and windows growing all that year... Note the small details, such as the always-glowing majick fire lamp. Back to the main Gareths Abode page Gareths Abode - The Power Stones Room in the Hexagonal Tower The hexagonal tower makes Gareths Abode unique. The unusual design was used in order to expose every one of the Power stones to direct sunlight. Here is a view from above, with the roof removed: Each Power Stone allows its possessor to enormously strengthen his or her powers in the relative field. But possessiion alone is useless, without the appropriate knowledge; and misuse can lead to horrendous consequences. The origin of the Power Stones is unknown; but so much is known, that they are much older than Gareth himself; perhaps older than the Lion Kingdom. Some say they were brought from the very center of LegOcean; others claim that they have been excavated from the stomache of Tunirus, the legendary King of Dragons. Some say that the reunion of all six stones - one was given to each apprentice, and one buried with Gareth - will bring peace and happiness to the country again. Most peasants believe these are all just tall tales, however... While their story remains a mystery, the facts remain that the Power Stones are one of their kind. Back to the main Gareths Abode page Gareths Abode - Roof Construction Gareths Abode has a very unique roof. Since it is placed atop a hexagonal tower, it cannot be a simple roof, like any other building. Here is a view of the roof from the side of the building: Next is a view directly from the top. You may notice that each of the six sides has two entirely separate pieces covering it. The top pieces, raised in the next picture, are made solely of plates in a cross-hatch construction. The top pieces are each eight studs wide; their length varies, with the pieces on the two aligned walls longer (and wider at the top) than those on the other four walls. The bottom pieces are almost a mirror image of their counterpart top pieces, except they are seven studs wide, and partially covered with tiles. In the following picture all twelve pieces are raised, and the connection to the walls becomes more evident. The pieces are each connected to a 2x2/1x4 plate hinge... and ...and then to a 1x2 hinge brick... and The pieces, when tilted, use a column which lies in the center of the tower for support. Zoom in on the connection even more... The idea for this roof design was given to me by Chris Maddison. The roof itself, including throwing around useless ideas, experimenting, buying parts and waiting for them to arrive, took longer to construct than the entire building (each took a month, although the tower had been on a back burner for half a year before that). Back to the main Gareths Abode page Chris Maddison came up with the fountain design, and the awesome idea for the roof. Heather Patey was shamelessly robbed of the design for the books in the library. Thanks to everyone who sold me parts for the roof. Special thanks to Erik Olson, who gave me a bunch of pieces for free. All photos and the rest of the design of the building are Copyright 2001, Shiri Dori Back to the main Gareths Abode page -Shiri |
