I've noticed something peculiar, though it may just be a factor of my own
stunted 3D visualization skills. I seem to have become noticeably better at
planning Lego projects in my head. I don't mean simple buildings like basic
Freestyle houses, but more intricate constructions with gearing and other
moveable parts. The only likely source of the change is my use of LDraw, in
which I've been forced to "see" the model I'm building from a somewhat more
limited choice of perspectives, thereby requiring a greater amount of
visualization vs. simply turning the thing over in my hands. Actually, the
evolution is kind of fascinating to me, because I didn't realize it had
happened until I tried mentally planning out a model and noticed that I could
make certain "calculations" more easily than I used to.
This kind of thing is probably second nature to you engineering types, but
to a little ol' English major, it's quite a nifty realization! Let's hear it
for Lego (and in this case LDraw) as an educational product!
