Hi-

SCLTC is up to something big. We will post a hint daily. You are invited to guess what we are doing. If, by chance, you know what we’re doing, then it would not be a guess for you to respond here.

Have fun!

Hint #1:

It’s big. Like, 200,000 bricks big.

I will start, since mosaics have a bit more than 2000 bricks per base plate, I will guess a super huge 100 baseplate mosaic.... although I dont really think that is it that would be cool!

Janey-

Actually, I think a 100 (48 x48) baseplate mosaic would be cool. Tha would get the resolution up to 480 x 480 or 75% of VGA, which is a lot better than the 8 baseplate x 3 baselplate mosaic we just presented to Northwood High School in Irvine, CA last week. Still, ours was 10 feet long and weighed 150 pounds!

Regarding your guess: No.

Bonus extended answer: It’s not a mosaic.

Ted, I would love to see some pics of your mosaic. I am toying with the idea of making one for my kids school, http://www.ismonterey.org/

Their logo is pretty colorful, and I think it would be cool, in about 320x120 resolution (7x3 48x48 baseplates).

Well, I do recall seeing an announcement of SCLTC going to the Orange County Fair, and, according to their site, it’s the year of the avacado. So, you plan on building a giant avacado made of LEGO bricks.

Adrian-

Well, it IS the year of the Avacado, SCLTC IS going to OCF, and one could make a huge avacod with that many green bricks.

No guess yet (though my original thought - “Brazil” - was killed by subsequent hints, LOL), just a few questions:

1. Will SCLTC be there for the whole Fair? If so that’s a lot of fried twinkies!

2. Is this replacing the sand sculptures that have been at the main entrance gate in the past?

3. Is asking questions cheating? :)

Darrell-

We like questions.

SCLTC will be at the show for about 270 hours for the whole 3 weeks and 4 weekends (we get Mondays off for good behavior).

Can’t speak to the sand sculptures.

The theme this year is “It’s Calling You Out to Play” and SCLTC has been asked to be the sole LEGO representative. We’re doing our largest train layout ever, a static (non-LTC) display area, a LEGO play area, a speed ISD build, and this Big Thing special event.

Go with the gut... a Catalina Island map?

I would have gone with mosaic too, but them it wouldn’t be posted here under .trains! ;)

BTW is the fact that it’s posted here mean its a train?

Catalina Island would certainly be topical. And fun.

Answer: No.

Extended answer. It’s not a train. I posted to trains because it’s being done by an LTC (just to prove we are versatile?).

That’s a lot of green & yellow, and I’m guessing that the blue is filler for.... a 7’ tall Crayola Box, which happens to be unsuitable for a SCLTC train layout.

A crayon box would be cool, but it’s been done big scale before.

We have had some rather small hot air balloons on our layout and a huge won would look nice in our outdoor setting.

The other featured themes on the website relate to chickens and eggs, but I don’t see green, yellow, & blue fitting that concepte.

My guess: a giant “can of food” built on the day that you can enter free by donating 5 cans of food.

Hmmm...If it doesn’t use baseplates, then it’s not a mosaic (something that you could lean against the wall), and it’s not something you’d set on the floor/ground either. Doesn’t go on the wall... Doesn’t go on the floor... 2X2 bricks can’t float in the air...

I’VE GOT IT! It’s a big pit of bricks, similar to those pit o’ balls that fast food places have for the kids to play in.

David-

I could dig a 200,000 brick LEGO pit. Certainly would sound good. Might not be all that comfy, long term.

Gee, a little mis-direction goes a long way in these things. To be clear: the general Big Thing is not circular, but there are some circular cross sections present.

True story: When Thomas appeared on I’ve Got a Secret and stumped the panel trying to guess that he was the US national LEGO champion, it became trivial once Teri Garrs seized on “something you do in the living room” and couldn’t move on and took the rest of the panel with her.

Answer: No, it’s not a blimp.

I actually saw that one day on a repeat...of course, back then, being on the east coast, and just emerging from my dark ages, I didn’t know the name “Michon”... until I met them at Brickfest PDX, and came within 4 minutes of the ISD build record with them...

Is it a multi-dimensional rainbow creature? (just throwing stuff out of left field here to break those trains of thought and come at the clues from the side...)

Well, we did set the (then) current North American record at BF on the second try. Turns out I’ll get a second chance at the OC Fair (3rd weekend) with the rest of SCLTC. At this point, I think beating the time take some practice as a team under actualy conditions (i.e., a team needs to do it more than once).

A rainbow would be right up the alley for my family, We love to make curved things with continuous (not stepped) arcs out of LEGO.

Doesn’t wine? That shatters my first guess, a big bottle of chablis (1) Doesn’t hee-haw? That cancels my second guess, a large sculpture of Buck Owens(1)(2) Doesn’t hiss? Well, that deflates my third guess, a giant tire(1)(3)

No, those aren’t “good” guesses in the spirit of “can we get another clue for a good guess” they’re just supposed to be “funny” guesses. YMMV.

2 - Didn’t he used to live in Bakersfield? That’s in California anyway, although not a close community, I don’t think. Presuably you have to be of a certain age to get the connection

3 - A tire technically doesn’t HAVE a wheel, it just GOES on a wheel

Giant minifig?

A couple of circular cross-sections (head, hips, arms) but not overall round...

Top point in yellow plates could be hair or upraised hand...

Yellow = hands, head green, blue & white could be torso, legs, arms in any order...

But you haven’t mentioned any red yet.

Is it two flags, with the yellow for flames of some sort?

We have a winner!

It’s a US flag designed to set a Guinness World Records recognized mark for the largest national flag made of LEGO in general and largest US flag made of LEGO in particular.

Our flag will be over 6 feet high, 12 feet long, and 8 studs thick with a maximum wave amplitude (it’s got a flutter) of about 40 studs. We made the union of solid blue and 1-stud thick SNOT stars are attached with click hinges on both sides. This meant we needed 2 x 50 = 100 stars, so that’s 5 rows of 6 and 4 rows of 5 on each side. In addition to the red, white, and blue stars, stripes, and union, we have a gray flagpole with a yellow ball on top. The other colors were just for internal interconnect to make a more balanced collection of parts after dissassembly (and because we could not get any more white).

We will assemble the flag during the second weekend of the July fair with the aid of the general public.

Thanks to everyone who made a guess.
