Whoa, this is way cool! Awesome ideas! I've got a few Q's and suggestions
tho:
1) I figured out I needed to hit the "Update" button to submit a vote. But
it's not intuitive where it's placed in the "My Collection" box.
2) Do the Private collection notes simply remain in the boxes, or should a
new addition on the page appear after hitting update? (like with the Public
collection)
3) Will the presumed-to-eventually-be-massive Public Collection info on each
page appreciably slow the database? Will there be an option to browse without
seeing those, but simply a link to look at them if desired?
4) Everything is grouped by major categories now, with no menu structure for
looking at sub-themes. Will this be re-added?
5) Where/how do we now submit info for the database? Maybe there needs to be
a little noted added about where to email info to. I've been using
themes@lugnet.org (I think).

OK, sorry 'bout that. Do you think it would it help if there were another
"update" button below the rate box?

For now, they're in the box, but probably tomorrow your own personal notes
will also appear along the top... It's just a loose end to tidy up, and we
wanted to make a cut and and put this up tonight.

If it gets too long of a list, we could put it on a sub-page. Someday ya I
think it would be helpful to be able to disable the view of that through some

I think Kyle meant (and even if he didn't, *I'd* like to see it) is that
you can currently get a thumbnail-list by theme, like
<http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?qc=*space&qn=20>. But it would be nice to be
able to get the same list, but limited to a subtheme, like M:Tron.

Well, actually, that link above lists any sets within a category containing
the component word "space" -- which in this case includes accessories and
Dacta categories.
If you want *just* LEGO SYSTEM Space sets, click the link that says _Space_
in one of the theme thingies that looks like this:
_LEGO_ > _SYSTEM_ > _Space_ > _etc_
and that'll bring you here:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/?qc=lego/system/space
Similarly, if you want *just* LEGO SYSTEM Space M:Tron sets, click a link
that says _M:Tron_ (or do a search for "m:tron" and click it) and that'll
bring you here:

which shows the 9 M:Tron sets (those and only those).

p.s. LEGO doesn't use the word "theme" or "subtheme" -- it's something
JoshuaD says I made-up a while back that unfortunately stuck. M:Tron is
actually a "play theme" within the LEGO Space System (a.k.a. LEGO SYSTEM
Space). Thus, Space and Castle aren't themes -- they're systems. M:Tron
and Ninja are play themes. (If you wanna be fully A/R about it. :-)

then browing the thumbnails until I find a member of a sub-theme,
and then clicking on that link next to it to get the rest of the

G'day Todd,
I was wondering about the outcome of the thread below
that we had a while back. Essentially, it concerned
the new set guide only having quick links to major
themes, but no (expandable) tree to allow direct
access to a sub-theme. For example, to see all the
sets in Classic Space (without using those search
terms) I need to select Space here:
http://guide.lugnet.com/
and then click on the {Classic} in the first classic
space set I find in the guide. Is a
browse-down-to-subtheme feature still planned?

Well, PayPal says they'll be doing international payments soon (they've been
saying that for a while, but I *think* I just heard it was supposed to be
happening in the next month). But certainly if you felt safe sending cash
(and it's not illegal in your country), you could send that in USD or your
local currency. There may also be other AFOL's in your country who do
business with people in the U.S. regularly by which you might be able to
send a payment through indirectly. Or maybe a few people might get together
and send one bank cheque. You could certainly post to your loc group and
ask around... http://news.lugnet.com/loc/ and find your country listed.

an alternative, being able to sort the result set by year, or price, or

Are the minifig searches from Fibblesmork going to be rolled into this
new guide some time? It was/is really useful to know which sets a
particular minifig appeared in.

I think we'll need to add some kind of advanced search. Right now if you
do some URL hacking you can get it to do logical-or, IIRC, on the theme
(category) and date (year), but of course it needs to be logical-and instead.

Yes, some time, but we're not sure when.

I think Huw Millington's database called BrickSet shows this info for many of
the sets.

I'll also heartily 2nd this! There have been a number of times when I'm
looking for, say, a town set that came out between 1984 and 1987, for example--
and perhaps I even know that it's got more than 100 pieces... It'd be very
handy to be able to include search criteria like this.
As for what I'd want to search by in an advanced search:
-Set Number (or range)
-Set Name (or close to it)
-Year (or range)
-Theme
-Piece count (usually range)

The 'large' images can be virtually any size -- some are more than 800 wide,
I think, so what we were thinking of doing is generating a selection of larger
thumbnails on 100-pixel boundaries... Right now there are 80x80 and 200x200
and then the full-size image, whatever that turns out to be. If it offered a
selection of, say, 300x300, 400x400, 500x500, 600x600, etc., through some
preference or detecting it on-the-fly using JS, how does that sound?

By the way, two other recommendations:
* How about putting the two white/blue arrows at the bottom of the page? It
would be very nice especially when browsing around multipage results of range
querries.
* How can we enter admin mode with the new interface? The old one still have
the admin mode button, but I can't see it on the new interface, although it
accepts me as an admin, since I can see the admin notes.

Wow! -- that's an interesting mystery. Not only does the new theme index
listing there show _only_ 5315, but the old one shows 13 matches _except_
5315:

I think I know what might be happening, but I'll have to look under the hood.
I think the curly braces { } around Suppmental in the 5315 case are getting it
confused about the category when it creates the new index and it's overwriting
the "{supplemental}" list internally with "supplemental" rather than pasting
the two together.

"Private" there means you're the only one who sees it when you visit the
set's page (not even other Members can see it).
"Public" there means anyone can see it -- whether they're a signed-in Member
or a casual user.

the text notes. And when other people view your list, they only see the
"Public" lists (i.e., numbers that you filled into the boxes labeled
"Public"). Only you, when you're signed in, see the info you entered into
boxes lableed "Private."
BTW, at the top of the page, it also links back to your member profile page,
http://www.lugnet.com/people/members/?m=401
and that's got a link back to your set-list page. So you can kinda hop around
in and out of the set DB and over to people's profile pages and back to their
lists and back to the DB again. Ooh, I'm getting dizzy. :)

Very, very nice. The inclusion of the want to sell/Want to buy features is
incredible. I didn't post about it then, but I started discussing a deal to
buy a set from someone based on the fact that they posted a desire to sell
within an hour of the first time I looked at the new set database format. The
deal isn't finalised yet, mostly because the seller hadn't considered how much
he actually wanted for the set yet. :D
A very powerful and valuable tool. At least, for those of us who want older
sets.

Cool. Nice & quick interface. It didn't take me more than an hour or so of
free time to enter my sets (from fuzzy memory). Now you give me a piece
count, and I find out I've got more LEGO than I thought! Always a good

Todd/Suze, this is awesome! If you can promise me you won't have a server
crash I'll delete my Excel collection database :] The parts count is really
slick, too, something I was doing in Excel.
I think a big plus out of all of this as well is that as more and more
people "register" their collections, maybe more will contribute to
filling in the "holes" in the database data (missing piece counts, etc.).
This data integration this is getting fearsome! ;]

Yep!! Extremely useful..:-) At least an "input set list page" where we
can input our sets by simply clicking on check boxes or such. Something
like summary pages of set searches. I think including the input
functionality to the current summary page format would do that nice.

The new stuff is great! How about a ranking system similar to
Fibblesnork? Except mayby a ranking for part selection rather than
alternate models. I've always found the multi-dimensional ranking on
Fibblesnork very helpfull in choosing what sets to pursue.

I agree with John on this one. Both a ranking for the Set and for the Part
Selection would be nice. The biggest example of this would be 7151-Sith
Infiltraitor http://guide.lugnet.com/set/7151 . Poor Set in terms of the Model
but a great Parts set.

Nothing big, really. An example is to have one window open for a TOC, and
another window open for the chapters; to change chapters you drag the
hyperlink from the TOC window to the chapter window. The benefit is keeping
the browsers' window placements the same while traversing a large site
quickly. I do this a lot for large sites with content that is formatted
largely the same, like an online newspaper or LUGNET. I'm not sure if I'm the
only one who does this. :-,
In IE 5.0 at least, you can drag an image with a hyperlink, and the hyperlink
would be dropped (as opposed to the image). Netscape gets confused if you
drag something that is both an image and a hyperlink, and refuses to drop any
content.

Ahh, I see. Well, sounds like what you really need then is a dual-frame or
tri-frame option. Then you wouldn't even have to drag the link -- just click
it.

Except that, due to my insane hatred for frames (;-), I'll actually break out
of 'em and use d&d browsing instead, since Netscape will remember frame names
across several browser windows.
It's really no biggie; I can browse the new format just as happily. But I was
just thinking that, since it's in a script already, it'd be pretty trivial to
wrap a hyperlink around the set title and number when you wrap it around the
set images.

That's when I grab my clue stick and don my taunting hat, and hunt down the
page author. :-,

If the frame name is relatively unique, then it's really no issue. If I have
a dozen Netscape windows up, but only one has the frame
name "SECRET_PROJECT_HENRIETTA_toc_section_four", then any HREF that targets
that frame will be loaded into that window.

I think there are several Europe-only sets in the DB and they aren't marked
with a language code. Most names there tend to be English.

Looks great!
One bug and one suggestion:
(1) The bug is that there is a missing range indicator
at the top of a listing, e.g. go to
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/
and follow the quick link to trains.
The first screen is OK --- it has
"First 20 of 224 Set Matches". But then click on
the right arrow for the next page, and it shows
"21–40 of 224 Set Matches". I guess there is supposed
to be a dash there between the 21 and 40.
(2) Suggestion: Duplicate the left and right arrows
for going backward and forward at the bottom of the
page so that when a user scrolls down, there is an
arrow there, and one doesn't need to scroll back to
the top to go to the next page.

Hmm. I see an en-dash there (not a hyphen and not an em-dash but an en-dash).
That doesn't show up for you? What browser/OS were you viewing with?
It's using entity – there, which is kind of a Microsoft-ism in character
set terms, but I had previously thought that all browsers honored it anyway,
and converted it to a hyphen if the en-dash wasn't available. Hmm.

Ya, sorry about that. We took it out last night because it was super-
confusing on short pages. We'll put it back after trimming it down in a
way which works great but isn't confusing.

I could have sworn that when I looked at the page
source the first time, it was just "2140", but now
when I look it is "21㫀".
Yes, it doesn't come out on Netscape 3.01 on Solaris
(I know it's old, but our sysadmins always have
"more important" things to do) but I don't expect
anyone to care about such an old version anymore.
Note, it is unrelated to the boldification.
I tried taking out the <B> and </B> and the en-dash
is still missing.

Nope, it was always there (I just checked). BTW, are you sure you aren't
seeing "21–40" now? There should be a ";" after the "–", otherwise
it's grammatically incorrect HTML, and you'd probabaly see "20" followed by
a splotch character of some sort.

Is the window that "pops up" when klicking on the the set picture, supposed
to be almost the same size as the original picture?
Or is it dependant on the size of scanned setpictures (Some small, some
big)?

9 times out of 10 it's larger -- but it's always the original size of the
original image uploaded, so sometimes it might not be bigger (and in some
really funky cases it might even be smaller).

I have a problem understanding that sentence(translating to Swedish, still
learning). What I meant was, I allways check LUGNET for new messages,
between 7 AM and 1 AM Local time, and you are allways there... i'm in GMT+1,
first timezone in US eastcoast is GMT-4....

In the category of wouldnt-it-be-nice-if-Todd-did-this ...
I really like the notes section in the sets database. I love reading these
notes and have been making an effort to write notes for sets I own to
contribute to this.
However, it would be nice to be able to get access to longer reviews than
can be written in one line. Currently reviews are all over the place, posted
as messages to all manner of lugnet groups as well as various people's
private WWW sites etc. Obviously including the complete reviews would
clutter up the database too much, but would it be possible for a note to
have an associated URL (as a separate field, not embedded in the note) to
provide a click to a larger review?
That way, the set database would be the entrypoint for any review that any
member chose to contribute without cluttering up the set database with the
reviews themselves. Then notes could serve as an "executive summary" of a
longer review, and interested people could follow the links to read the full
review.

Todd and Suz - this is a phenomenal service. FYI - I've added piece counts for
baisc sets from the mid 80s/early 902 to my comments on sets taht I own. I
hope this helps.
