The Three Bats

The Three Bats is a little shop run by Aurum the Alchemist. It’s quite obvious that this shop is part of the Guild of the Bat. It was built in heavy grey stone, because alchemy experiments often result in explosions and Aurum wanted to be sure that an unfortunate accident would not bring the house down... So the grey exterior may seem pretty boring, the inside of the shop is very cosy. It is stacked full of obscure potions and ingredients, and there’s a big cauldron on the fireplace.

Aurum is considered to be an absent-minded man who is always busy mixing some new potion or trying out new ingredients. He often stays late in his shop because he is simply in the middle of some experiment. Because his shop contains so many exotic wares, he doesn’t get too many customers. Most people go the Helena the Healer when they are feeling sick, because she’s the authority on the medicinal potions. If you need spices or herbs, Hrogar the Herbalist is the man you need. But when you need spell ingredients, or something like a love potion, The Three Bats is the shop to go to!

Aurum is not the only individual in the shop; there’s also Fritz the Frog. This is actually Ahrtreyu the Assassin of the Guild of the Serpent, who tried to assassinate Aurum, but his plan backfired when he was changed into a frog... Aurum may seem like an old confused man but he is actually very quick-witted and really smart. He knows that there are ties between the Guild of the Snake (the Healer’s Guild) and the Guild of the Serpent (the Assassin’s Guild), and not simply because their guild symbols are so similar; he found out that Helena the Healer is actually one of the three Poisonmistresses of the Guild of the Serpent (thanks to the unorthodox use of his invisibility potion and ‘truth gas’). After confronting her he convinced her that her secret is safe, providing that they won’t undertake any assassination attempts anymore. That should be no problem, because the person who gave the order to kill Aurum was recently assassinated himself; the Guild of the Serpent likes to clean up loose ends and botched attempts. And Helena knows now that Aurum is a formidable opponent (you have to be pretty good to survive an assassination attempt, and she knows Aurum knows plenty of detection tricks to warn him in time) but the knowledge of Aurum’s true abilities is very valuable for her. In the meantime, Fritz/Ahrtreyu the Frog really hopes he won’t end up being an ingredient in a potion... It may just be that Aurum is keeping him alive because he’s the only link who knows who wanted Aurum to be assassinated...

Aurum’s main quest is to find the potion that can cure vampirism, especially when you know that the leaders of the Guild of the Bat were turned into vampires long ago. He has booked a limited success by finding an artificial substitute for blood, allowing them to survive for a little while without having to kill for blood. He also found out how to suppress lyncanthropy for a limited time, which was very interesting for the Guild of the Wolf because they have some hunters who got bitten by a werewolf...
