LUGNET MISSION STATEMENT UPDATE

Note: A previous vision of LUGNET’s purpose and goals, created in 1997, is presented here: http://www.lugnet.com/admin/plan/2.html This document attempts to update those goals and purpose.

A. Historical Purpose and Goals of LUGNET

Overall Purpose:
To enrich the online experience for the LEGO enthusiast in a growing number of new ways.

Goals:
  • To help people share ideas
  • To help people share information about LEGO products and LEGO-related resources
  • To help people exchange items for sale or trade
  • Be helpful and fun for people of all ages

B. Updated Purpose and Goals of LUGNET

A lot has happened in the various online and IRL LEGO communities since Todd and Suzanne wrote the first LUGNET Plan. LUGNET has had the honor of playing a central role in bringing many Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) together, and is currently an institution second to none in LEGO enthusiast discussion. But in the last eight years, changes to the Internet; the LEGO Group of Companies; the economy; and the nature of LEGO enthusiasm itself, necessitates an update to the definition of LUGNET’s role within the community it has helped to create.

IN ADDITION to the historical goals listed above, LUGNET has the following goals:
  • Provide specific open forums for LEGO-related groups to utilize as a virtual clubroom;
  • Provide a venue for enthusiasts to define and solve issues relating to the LEGO hobby
  • Provide a searchable knowledge archive for fans and non-fans
  • Act as an inter-community meeting place
  • Foster communication, idea exchanges, and best known methods between multiple LEGO-related groups and clubs
  • Portray the positive basic principles of the LEGO hobby, and the ideals of building and learning, to the general public

C. Site Audiences

Many different types of people enjoy and peruse LUGNET. Everyone is welcome; below are some of the specific audiences the site is meant to serve.
  • Current LEGO enthusiasts who want to read and share ideas on custom creations and all things LEGO-related
  • Current LEGO enthusiasts who are interested in reading about various LEGO-related subjects, but don’t particularly wish to join the discussion
  • Casual LEGO enthusiasts who are looking for a particular piece of LEGO-related information of image
  • Non-enthusiasts interested in finding out more about the overall LEGO hobby, or are interested in learning about specific subsets of the hobby
  • Casual web surfers who arrived via link from an external source
  • Parents of LEGO enthusiasts looking for LEGO-related information or images
  • NLSO (Non-LEGO Significant Others) trying to understand more about their SO’s obsession
