Sydney harbour bridge

Call me stupid, but I’ve decided to try to model the “Coat Hanger”. This is a bit of a departure for me - lots of technic, but no moving parts!

Update 17/06/02:

I added a couple of pictures with me in them, for scale - here and here.

Update 29/12/01:

Bridge not totally finished yet, but I put together an entry for the First ISCC Creativity Contest.

Update 29/10/01:

Arch completed! Span 3.6m (14 x 32 studs approx.), slightly less than initial design, total bridge length 4.1m, max. height 104cm (with no deck). Pretty solid, except horizontal braces, which don’t need to be anywhere near as rugged as the rest anyway. Added 1 brick to height of abutments. Main deck 24 studs wide, outrigger decks 4 studs (as per design).

Design ideas:
  1. Both main arches 6 studs wide. Consists of two studs for arch, 1 stud for vertical brace, 1 stud for diagonal brace, 2 more for arch. Arches all in black (hopefully). This and the plates for the deck are the major purchases required. Update: Add to that the grey bricks for the abutments - about 18,000 studs.
  2. All sections of top arch 17 studs long (between connectors / axles). This allows most of the 16x1 beams to be alongside one another, and enough room at each end for a hinged joint to the next section. This will make the finished arch somewhere just short of 4m long. Update: Arch will be about 3.8m, total length about 4.2m.
  3. Arch supported by two “hinges” at each end, pin made of 2x2 round bricks, supported by macaroni bricks. Will require 32-40 macaroni bricks. Update: Decided to use only 2 2x2 rounds for each hinge, and fix the pins to the abutments, so only need 16 macaroni.
  4. Bases held at correct distance by string. Yeah, it’s cheating, but it’s better than anything else I could come up with. Update: Now using baseplates - in rows of 2, requiring 28 32x32 blue baseplates.
  5. Abutments / pylons in light grey. Will need plenty arches. Also maybe some 3x2x1 slopes? Update: To say nothing of Nx2 slopes
  6. Deck 44 studs wide. This allows 24 studs between arches (5 lanes of minifigs), 12 for the arches, and another 8 outside the arches (4 each side).
  7. You can see some progress pics here, along with some shots I took while in Sydney.
