Red Boxcar

This is my first-ever train MOC - a plain old red boxcar - which I built as a Christmas present for a friend of mine. I don’t have any track myself, and the only train set I have is the Super Chief, but I really enjoyed researching and building this one.

The key feature of this MOC is the 1/5 stud offset ribbing technique used for the sides of the car. I borrowed this idea from Mark Chan’s amazing Union Station, specifically the roof.

I modified his technique by making the ribs two plates thick, which simplified construction immensely (see the complexity of Mark’s roof). Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to take detailed construction pictures. The walls are oriented with the studs facing the ends of the car, and 1x1 Technic bricks enable connections to the roof and floor.

The door is non-functional (not that the SNOT construction left a lot of cargo room). One thing I would have liked to have done differently is to use the new 1x3 round slopes for the roof, but they were not readily available.

Thanks again to Mark Chan, and to Tom Fassett’s Rail Transfer Station, which has many pictures of boxcars.
