Iron Fist

This was my first attempt on a quadruped Mecha.
It was built for the IRON MECHA CONTEST.
I wanted to build a medium sized Mecha which was
not an accurate model of the given image, but my
own interpretation of it.

The beginning was really
hard. I had several tries
on the legs and hips.

None of them worked. I also did geared hips. They were so ugly, I didn’t
take photos at all.

The change came with a dream. One night I dreamt of a small Mecha. The
next day I built this:

   Later it was named
Little Fist

But I had started to go for a medium Mecha not for a small one! What I took
from this small exercise was the hip and leg joint structure. I restarted and
built a completely new lower body.

You can easily figure out the joint
arrangement is identical to the one
on Little Fist.

After solving the joint proplems in sleep the rest could have been pure fun!
But then it was very busy on my job. For more than a week there was no time
for building. And time was running.

When I got started again luck was with me. The work just
flew. I build the front of the upper body in one afternoon.
The gun was begun and finished the same evening.

The missile launcher got me caught again. The first attempt
was to small, the next one looked too bulky. It also added
too much weight.

Finally I came up with this one.

It really looked good. After mounting it to the almost finished Mecha, the overall
shape didn’t look good. There was a strong accent on the left side.

I decided to live with this. The back was completely missing. So this had priority.
If there should be time in the end, maybe I could find a better solution for the
left side.

The back should hold the engine. Although there was not too
much space there, this was going well again. And while working
on the engine I found the solution for the over mighty left.

I cut the support on the left down to two studs. Thus the outer
edge of the launcher housing was not longer too far from the
bodys ceter.

That’s the end of the story so far. Yesterday I took the photos of the finished Mecha.
While looking at it very close again and again, the missile launcher caught my eye.
Having Allister McLarens Centaur in mind it reminded me of a fist. So I found the name
Iron Fist.
