Remix Lenin Challenge Results

After sharing raytracing tips with some other AFOLs and having one of my models ‘remixed’ by Adrian Carpenter I thought it would be a neat idea to have something similar with more people. ‘Remix Lenin’ was the result.

The basic principle was to take an LDraw file supplied by me (a statue of Lenin with a minifig guard beside it) and see what people would do with it using their own raytracing and other CGI tricks.

While the challenge got off to a good start it seemed to peter off after about a fortnight. The standard of entries was excellent and I certainly learnt some new tricks and saw some great work which was the real intention of the exercise. Overall I was quite happy with it and really enjoyed seeing what people came up with.

If anyone reading this wants to make their own version of Lenin then download the LDraw file and go for it. I’m happy to add any new entries to this page if you post it in lugnet.cad.ray or email it to me at tgould(.DOT)lego(A@T)gmail(.DOT)com

The entries

In light of the small number of entrants and lack of indication I cancelled the competition aspect of this and decided to write my thoughts on each entry instead.

The creators names are followed by the BS gallery name in brackets. I highly recommend reading the entry posts for these as most include some tips or tricks you may want to use in your own renders.

Adrian Carpenter (adrien)

I really like the overall effect of these two images. They look so toylike but also have a ‘real’ quality that makes them almost eerie. Great poster art.

Anders Isaksson (anders-isak)

I love the story these pictures tell. They also show off the ‘natural’ simulation abilities of POVRay with the different sky textures and the water. The use of the ‘unframed’ photographs is a really neat touch too.

Andreas Weissenburg (grubaluk)

This was the first entry in and an impressive one at that. The use of the snow macro was so perfect for the model. It’s something I really need to try out some day.

I really liked the way you took Zach’s trick of rescaling LEGO parts and used it in a new way for this entry. The overall effect is really outstanding and it’s a great way of doing something different.

Stijn Deruder (koyan)

Entry post

Highly realistic rendering. The dark grey seems a little light to me which taking into account Thomas’ render leads me to suspect that the combination of sand blue and dark grey is a hard one to get right. The tutorial you linked to is a fantastic help and I’ve already started using some of the tricks from it in my more recent renderings.

Sven Moritz Heinz (smhltec)

Entry post

The touch of fog in this gives it a great cold weather effect. The muting of the colours adds to this too. I rather like the angle of this shot too.

Thomas Burger (grapeape)

Entry post

Another highly realistic rendering. Here the dark grey seems too dark in contrast to Koyan’s render where it was too light. I find the backlighting quite effective.

Zach Best (ravious)

Entry post

Nice to see an entry made in something other than POVray to allow for comparison. I liked the concept of resizing LEGO parts to make your background scenery and the snow and fog is very neat.
