| Background to The Great Mariner The Mountain Archipelago The Mountain Archipelago, as the name implies, is a large number of islands over a vast sea. Almost all of the islands have substantial mountains on them. The area used to be a great basin valley, but filled with water many years ago. All that remains are the tips of the mountains. The Lower Dwarven Empire sits primarily on the continent to the east of the Archipelago. Three hundred years ago it began building above ground settlements on the coasts. The Dwarves were then drawn into the Archipelago by the great number of resource rich mines on the mountain islands. But still most dwarves stayed within the protection of the Empire. Many different peoples live throughout the Archipelago, but there is no centralized kingdom or empire except the Lower Dwarves. Most of the inhabitants are Humans, Orcs, Dwarves, and Sea Elves. There are also substantial minorities of Bouws, D’oks, Giants, and Dragons. The Sea Elves and Humans are primarily peaceful, except when battling the warlike Orcs. The Orcs divide themselves into many different tribes, probably as many as 500, but only 20 major ones. The largest Orc tribes are Shoeli, Sigeru, and Ton’da. The Shoeli had united several smaller tribes into the Great Orc Alliance to fight back the growing Lower Dwarf presence. But the Dwarves, with help from Humans and Sea Elves, but primarily from the Sigeru and Ton’da, were able to score significant victories. The Great Alliance fell apart, and the wars practically ended. There has been an uneasy peace ever since. Back |
