One of the models at this site is a box car based on Gianluca's design.  I
think I've approached the stud-offset in a little different manner, but
achieving the same offset fraction. ??
All credit to Gianluca for showcasing this type of "ribbed-pannel"
construction.  (I think.  I hope I haven't misdirected credit.)

Actually, I believe this is a 3/10 stud offset rather than 1/2 stud.  Here's
how I come up with that number:

Based on the the pictuer at:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=20721

I generally caluclate things base a unit that is 1/5 of a stud width (which
is 1/6 the height of a brick, 1/2 the height of a plate, or the same height
as a stud itself).

So, using this, starting from the left side of the car, you go in 3 studs,
which is 15 units. That brings you to the left face of the red technic
brick.  Then, you go back out 3.5 units which brings you to the center of
technic brick. (The holes in technic brics 3.5 units from the bottom, 2.5
units from the top (top being the end with the stud)).  This make the center
of the technic pin stud at 11.5 units from the left edge of the car.  The
technic pin stud is inserted in the cylinder in the middle of the above
white brick.  This brick is 15 units long and that hole is centered 10 units
(two studs) from the left edge of the brick. So, the left edge of the white
brick is 1.5 units from the left edge of the car (11.5 - 10 = 1.5).

So this is 1.5/5 of a brick offset, or 3/10 of a brick (to make a real
fraction of it).  You can get some really neat spacings using the headlight
bricks and the technic bricks to change stud orientations.  Ive been playing
around with that alot lately.  The geometry of the Lego Brick is
incredibibly facinating to me.
