Having come sort of late into the market, I don't have enough knowledge of
the earlier sets to make a good determination. Of sets available at retail
or through S@H in the past year, my favorite set which includes a locomotive
and cars would be 4565. The locomotive is decent (though of somewhat unusual
design) and the cars are all 8 wheel with trucks. The cargo loads are a
little crummy. It's a tough call between this set and 3225. 3225 though is
all 4 wheel cars, and the steam locomotive is nice, but just a switcher, not
even large enough for a short line (which might run a mixed consist - that
red car at the end is NOT a caboose, it's a coach) locomotive.
As far as favorite single set in the whole train line, my favorite would be
4531. Why? Well, you can't have an interesting layout without turnouts (and
I decided not to count the track bundles, since they are just a cheaper way
to order a certain collection of sets). Actually, I think this would stand
as my favorite set counting every set ever made (the remote controlled 12V
turnouts lose because while it's neat to have the remote control, the center
power rail of the 12V system is even worse looking that Lionel's 3 rail
[which also has the advantage of allowing reverse loops]).
Now some thoughts on sets (and I'll actually expand this to sets available
for purchase) that others see as their favorite:
4558: 2 locomotives (one dummy) and ONE car? Come now. Had this set been a
locomotive and TWO cars, it would score a LOT higher.
4547: (I've listed this because of other comments). Well, at least we have
an add on car, unfortunately, because it's very different from the car
included in 4558, you can't just by 1 4558, and a number of 4547s and have a
reasonable looking train (unless you ditch the car from 4558).
7740: ahh, much better.
7815: and a nice add on car, bumps up the desirability of 7740
7819: and a SECOND add on car!
4551: This is probably one of the best locomotives.
4549: certainly a useful car
Larry's Hopper: this would be my favorite freight car
4563: Cute. Nice diesel switcher. Eurotrash 4 wheel cars.
4564: Another cute one. The diesel switcher in this set might actually be
used as main power on a short line, making this set a tad better than 4563.
So that's my thoughts.
