Sounds like you got the bug bad, Bryan...excellent! (spoken like Mr.Burns) !
My suggestion would be to go the PNLTC's website and, when you've finished
drooling, start clicking on links for ideas- these guys are way more creative
than TLG has become.  Some come with instructions, and even one comes
animated (kudos, Will Chapman)  And to answer your question, it's called a
"car where 2 guys pump up & down to make it go" car;)  Actually, I'll defer
to our resident cornucopia of choo choo info guy, Larry.
Welcome  Aboard!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Lego trains.  Where your trains are limited
by only your imagination.  That's coming from a guy who has built a twenty
legged dodecapede insectoid train and even the Evil Knievel Stunt train.
Sorry, no picures, it didn't survive the jump.

regaring your question:
I'll let Larry answer what it is officially called, but I'll call it a pushcar.

For an idea, look at the one that comes with the Lego Loco CDROM.  Or as an
alternate, I built one similar but changed most of what was above the 4x6
plate.  It works something like this:

One top of the 4x6 plate with small train wheels, put two 1x2 tiles w/ center
stud on top on either side of the 4x6 plate.  Place one 1x1x1 technic beams on
top of each 1x2 tile with center stud.  use a 2x2x1/3 with technic peg holes
underneath and use technic pegs to connect it to the 1x1x2 technic beams.  Then
use two 1x2x1/3 'space lasers' (they have thin rods sticking out either side
for a distance of almost two studs) on top of the 2x2x1/3 plate mentioned
above.  place the 'space lasers' such that they point to the sides, not front
to back.  Wala, one Lego Push car.

I think this looks a little better then the handle bar approach Lego used.

Hope the text description is good enough.  If not, email me.

I usually refer to it as a gandy dancer. The game LEGO LOCO comes with one.
There are also instructions to build one in the 7777 Train Idea Book:

By the way, if anyone wants to sell a 7777, please let me know.

Well, I believe it's called a handcar.

And, I believe gandy dancer is slang for a track worker. So called
because the process of setting ties, laying tie plates, dropping rail,
setting spikes, and driving them home, when properly executed by a crew
that knew what they were doing, was so fluid and graceful that it looked
like a ballet.

The UP was able to lay 10 miles of track a day using seasoned crews in
1869 with no other mechanical assistance than horse drawn graders and
locomotives pushing flatcars of ties and rails in front of them down the
newly laid track to keep the track gang supplied. That was achieved
because the crews knew what they were doing, and because they were on
relatively easy terrain.

By the way, if anyone wants to sell a 7777, please let me know.

Harro had two recently, they went for about 50 each. You just missed it.

<sound of palm hitting forehead> I downloaded the entire 7777 book to a
Zip disk and did not even think to look there.... Thanks for the heads
up. Unfortunately, due to a nasty, incapacitating bought of the flu, I
did not do any building this weekend... drat.

You are probably right. I looked at the box for my HO scale model and Bachmann
calls it a gandy dancer. That is what I have always called it.

Correct.

I have downloaded the entire book, but having an original copy would be nice.

Hi

I have made a motorized version of a  'handcar'.  I used Will Chapmans
minibattery and micromotor trick.  It doesn't move very quickly, but it is neat
to see the arm rock up and down as it moves along!
