I must agree with Ben -- and this might be a little more blunt. As much of a
LEGO trainhead that I am, I find it difficult to justify building a shrine to
the 9v series in its stock form. Same goes for older stuff. While I
appreciate the lines of 4.5-, 9- and 12volt, I feel that devoting more than a
reaction to these and then not moving on to create one's own is missing out on
a bunch. I see the same thing on RTL: "Ooh, must get all castle and display
this for eternity..."
Yes, I've a few sets left as stock but 20% of my 70piece collection is heavily
modified and a full 75% is MOC. I've received comments ranging from no
reaction to fantastic. Most importantly, they're MOC!! It's the creating that
is the best keeping of the LEGO spirit.
Admittedly, due to earlier budget constraints I missed quite a few of the 9v
series' sets and I concentrated on amassing accessory packs which, in the long
run, sharpened my building skills significantly. Thus, I wouldn't trade the
experience even if someone offered to *give* me a bunch of the 9v sets I
missed. KEY POINT: I only consider a set (new or old) savory *if* it has
elements I can use in MOC.
Not to discount anyone's taste or activity here -- and I'll still search for a
few sets myself -- but I sincerely hope we do not denegrate into getting too
wrapped up in holding LEGO designs too sacred. They're pieces so I encourage
everyone to play -- and play well!!
