Finally got to see the movie!

To all,

Well, I finally saw the movie! I wanted to wait until the crowds would not be
so bad, and I was not disappointed! My place of work has summer hours, which
translates into having half of Friday off, so I went to the Showcase theater
nearby. It was great! About 20 people in the whole theater, I got the very back
row of the theater for myself, with the mandatory popcorn and ice junkie. Darth
Maul, a few battle droids, and even Darth Vader minifigs infiltrated the movie
with me.

Overall, I thought it was a great movie, the special effects were stunning, and
the pod race was awesome! My only real complaint was the "evil" Trade
Federation. Do all bad guys go to the Bad Guy school of Idiocy? Ugh, can you
imagine having one source for all droid communication? Where's the backup?

The only other suggestion was Darth Maul, for being as publicized as he was, he
sure didn't have much of a part. I think the pilots of the Queens ship (Looked
like a chrome SR-71 Blackbird, BTW, for all you military jet buffs out there)
had a bigger part.

It was a great movie, now I am looking forward to changing about half the Lego
sets to match the actual one in the movie!

I like the battle droids but they were way too reckless. I mean it was like,
"Oh, look! A Jedi!
I wonder what he's going to do with that lightsaber!? Oh, I just found out."
They were quick
to turn(in most cases) but slow to raise their blaster. Figure that out.

I knew it reminded me of some real plane. I think I'll check a picture to see
how close it
really is to a blackbird.

Hi,
It is very similar to the blackbird, without the canted vertical stabilizers
over the engines.  The queen's cockpit is much further back as well.  Her
ship appears to be at least 2-4x the size of an SR71, which is really quite
small. See my previous comments on this subject.

Wow, even a Transformers reference! This should go to the obscure reference of

I don't have a photo in front of me, but didn't Cyclonus have forward- swept
wings?  I'd swaer he did.

But now that you mention it, yeah, the windows do look like him.  I knew they
looked familiar from someplace...

Except for the Coruscant city scenes, IMO. The space scenes were the best ever
seen, but cityscapes still have a long way to go. I thought the film was
fantastic.

Remember Silence of the Lambs, and all of the publicity Lector got? He
appeared for maybe 10 minutes of the film, and that was it!

I loved the Corscant scenes, probably because they used an entire planet for one
city! (It could have been more detailed, however!) Can you imagine Lego coming
out with one of those landing pads that the Queen's ship landed on? That would
be a neat set, complete with a landing plate, a docking port on the side, and
maybe those monorail supports to make an illusion of floating? :)

The views from the landing pads were superb. The setting sun
scene was excellent. But the general city views were pants.
Particularly the views of the Jedi Council building and
Senate building. I was disappointed with all of the taxis
flying around, especially when QJ and OWK were discussing
whatever. That particular sunset scene left me a bit cold.

The views of Theed, however, were superb, except for the
moonlit one. The invasion arrival one, as featured in the
trailer, was probably my favourite.

I haven't seen SotL recently, but Hannibal the Cannibal had a *lot* more
screen time than 10 minutes.

And he had a lot more character than Darth Maul.  Darth Maul wasn't a
character, he was a plot device.  He was a gargoyle, waiting for people to
come around the corner and be surprised to see him.  The battle droids had
more interesting characters.

Oh, and he was a really kick-ass lightsabre duelist.

I agree with Steve. I loved TPM, the only disappointment (Outside of the
technical glitches in all SW movies) is the lack of development of the bad/evil
characters. The Trade Federation people were a bunch of weak knee wishy-washy
jelly fishes, dependent on the droids, who could have been so much more
menacing.

Darth Maul seems to be a a "oops, lets insert a light saber duel here to make
this movie more SW compliant."

One of the neat things about the original series, IMHO, is that it showed the
bad/evil characters very well, while also having the heroes (Luke, etc.)
develop. In TPM, it seemed more of an afterthought.
I think Episode 2 will address this better.
To get back to Lego, at least we can recreate some of the adventures, to give
the Dark Side a better glimpse.

I liked the Trade Federation guys -- they're probably invertebrates,
evolving directly from some jellyfish floating in an alien sea somewhere.

The battle droids definitely should have been more menacing.  Or there
should have been two different types of droids: one with the guns, with a
menace-level somewhere between the Destroyer Droids and the Battle Droids,
and another type which would be a scout/officer/human interface type.

Darth Maul seems to be a a "oops, lets insert a light saber duel here to make

Kinda, yeah.  It just seems like (outside of the Final Battle) he spent
most of his time skulking.

Leads me to ask a question....
Why, when the issue of "who started it" was done with (the tanks
started the battle), did the Gungans not attack the droids
when they were being offloaded? Or am I mis-remembering the
battle sequence?

Quote from TPM the book: "The Gungan shield wall was designed to deflect
large, slow-moving objects of density and mass such as artillary vehiclas and
small, fast-moving objects generating extreme heat such as projectiles from
weapons fire.  But it would not deflect small, slow moving droids-even massed
together in such numbers as they were here."

My guess is that the Gungan projectiles wouldn't be able to leave the shield.
They needed the droids to get close for combat since their long range weapons
were lacking.  Dunno, almost sounds like Terry Brooks, the auther, had to do a
lot of grasping trying to explain alot of this stuff in the book.

It looked to me like the Gungans couldn't throw their little blue balls through
the sheilds, just like the Tanks couldn't fire in.  Once the Droids got through
the shield, they opened up on them.

Dropping the sheild to hit the Droids as they were offloaded would have meant
getting pasted by the Tanks.

That's how I saw it, at least.

Because they knew they were just stalling for time?  Why hasten the battle
when your goal is to use up time?

I don't like the explanation of "can't fire out through the shields".  Who
would come up with a defense like that?

When the other guys have long range heavy artillery and all you had was

I think that the Gungan army held off to conserve ammunition. They knew that
the tanks (oops! Errr... ATT's that is) were not the main threat to them
because of their powerful shields, but the Battle Droids were. Why waste ammo
on something that won't do you any harm? They were probably waiting to use
their limited ammo on the droids instead.

Wasn't the Gungan army just there to provide a diversion?  Otherwise they
would have advanced (or tried) when they were under the shield.
