My friend (who works in 'the biz') got some 'studio time' booked at his shop and
we set up the #OBBCSL. He set up the lighting and the screens and I set up the
layout.
He originally thought about 'green screening' but that would have been so much
post production... so we just used blackout screens around the back half of the
layout.
We then took some footage using his Osmo camera. That littel camera is quite
impressive.
He was using 120 fps, and I can't remember what aperture or ISO or anything like
that...
The Osmo was able to get right into the layout better than my usual cell phone
vids...
As well, my friend then added specific sound effects to the various monorails
and nodes around the layout, and overlayed it with a wonderful soundtrack.
I am so pleased with the result - it was worth the effort to set up for the day
at the studio.
He gave me all the raw footage, and I don't know what I'll do with it yet...
This 'mini movie', however, I'm trying to incorporate into the display at shows.
I'll figure it out :)

:)

I set up my WinXP VM with BrixCC and connected one of my RCX's to my copperized
monorail track.
I wrote a quick NQC program that would control the speed and direction of the
monorail train via a rotation sensor connected to the RCX.
It's not as wonderful as Mark Reilly's LDCC but it works on a 'regular' RCX
firmware.
Future state is for maybe 'public' control of one of the monorail loops at a
show.
We'll see about that

Yeah, I wanted a project during Covid and this was as good as it gets for me...
And no one else posts here anymore - not even that guy talking about monthly
dinners...
So with much further ado, I've been building and reviewing all LEGO space sets,
starting at 6800 and working up sequentially to 6991
I'll probably then go do the other sets in other ranges - possibly going to the
3 digits first (as its classic...)
And I'm not close to being done yet...

This started as a real-life build with my son that then got embellished in LDD
and rendered with bluerender. 
The design is a departure from my typical “Neo-Classic-Space” builds. Its form
felt much more “organic” and the green/dark-gray color scheme felt like it
should belong to a reptilian race of aliens. It is armed with 2 powerful
anti-capital ship cannons that draw power directly from the main engines. it
has twin light blasters mounted on the tip of each sponson as well as 4 guided
missiles. The cockpit detaches and serves as an escape pod. It is a compact
design with only 230 bricks and as such I had to abandon my general rule of
including retractable landing gear in my designs.
After it was built, it did feel like it subconsciously drew inspiration from the
new-battlestar-galactica cyclon raiders.
I also rendered it as a Blactron ship which felt like it could have fit the
general theme.

This is the one I've been personally trying to get into for a few years now.
Not just because it's in my own 'back yard', but this place is one of my
favourite places to visit--

and it was a blast. They have a relatively large outdoor permanent train
layout. I don't know the scale, but you can ride the train cars--I think its 8
inches or something.
They also have a raised train track layout at the same scale, on which a
'scratch built' functioning steam engine will pull a few people around--that was
awesome!
The model boat builders set up a temporary pond, and kids can RC boat race and
stuff.
The Meccano guys have been there in the past, and their creations are pretty
great.

K, enough gushing about the location.
So I'm bringing the CSL to their Boats, Models and Train event--it's 2 days--the
25 and 26th of May. Public hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. You can do
the other stuff as well, and get a tour of the pump house.
I'm going to try it out this year with the layout, mostly because we don't have
alotta 'lead time' to get others signed up for a bigger display, but I really
hope this one is successful, not only so we can have a bigger turnout next year,
but the person I'm working with would love to see basically an 'all lego' event
in 2020 that they can market it and it'd just be us :)
Now that would be awesome!
Anyway, I'm excited, and if you are interested in displaying on May 25/26th, let
me know and I can check with the organizer--I'd love to see you. Our display
will be inside the building, which gets locked up at night with security and all
that.
As an aside, I didn't want to do more than 4-5 shows a year when I started
getting back into it, and I'm already at 4 now--2 done, 2 confirmed for May. I
did these shows to see how the CSL can be packed and how quickly it can be set
up.
I'm tentative for the Greater Toronto Train Show in October, so that's 5. We'll
see what else we can do. Leaping back into this, I already have around the same
number of shows this year that we used to do back in the day.

I'm going to go all rtlT 'old school' on this one.
I contacted the organisers at the Greater Toronto Train Show and they would like
to have us at their train show October 5 and 6th in Brampton, Ontario.
Now I'm ONLY going to do this show if I get some people committed to bringing
*something* for displaying. I will be bringing the CSL, so we already have a 5
by 7.5 spot filled.
I'm thinking about a 10 x 20 foot display area, set up all old school with
tables around the perimeter and us all in the middle, having a grand old time.
So if you have anything that you want to display--doesn't have to be trains or
space,--ANYTHING LEGO would be fantastic--and you can attend for the weekend,
let me know.

Hello Space People!
After the new Benny Spaceship came out for LM2, I thought I could build a 918
using the BUWP (Big Ugly Wing Piece)
So I tried. At first, I just added 3 x 6 wing plates to the front and back, and
added other wing plates on top to get the required depth for the minifig inside
the cabin.
Last week it hit me--many spaccers are doing the 'DWD' (double wing deck) thing,
so I tried to build another modified 918 using the BUWP and DWD

I've included all my interations of the 918 through the years (okay, one from a
decade ago and 2 from this year)
As we got a Cricut cutter for Christmas, I've created stencils for the registry
#, and, following my favourite sci-fi series of all time, labelled my subsequent
builds from the original 918 as A, B and C. The font I used--I asked elsewhere
and the response was Microgramma--that works well.
Having fun with the BUWP--i'm going to get a few more sets and try some other
ideas.
