Ah, that's the mistake I had made.  Looking closer, am I correct in assuming
that Cygwin is only required to build the cross compiler?  What about the
utility program such as firmdll.exe?  We can ignore the need to compile the
cross-compiler.  Few people will wish to do that.  We can include working
binaries of the utilities so that the won't need to build them.  In addition, a
few unix type programs would be required, e.g. rm, or versions of the various
makefile can be editied to use standard DOS commands.

The entire legOS would build from the native shell if the for loops in the
top level Makefile were changed.

That seems like a simple enough change

Doing a native port of gcc/egcs is a huge task, and I think it would be
better to figure out how to repackage the minimal amount of cygwin necessary
to get the LegOS build system working.  The only issue would be cygwin
licensing.  I noticed yesterday that Cygwin seems to be commercial, and that
they're last beta is freely available.  I don't know if we could legally
repackage it as part of a LegOS installer to get things working on Windows.

I noticed in my Hitachi directory a file called cygwin1.dll.  It is required to
run the cross compiler and was included with the h8 package I grabbed.  As an
experiment, I removed the entire Cygnus package from my system.  The compiler
runs as long as cygwin1.dll is available.
