I just read Mike Plusch's undergraduate dissertation (link near the
bottom) at:
http://el.www.media.mit.edu/groups/el/Projects/constructopedia/kego.html
In it he describes a lego technic contructopedia built using FileMaker
Pro. The database does not appear to be available for download, but
there are some images of a couple queries on this page near the
bottom.
From the couple examples he gives, you can only guess at how well the
database does the job of providing a useable constructopedia.
He hints at the possibilities of doing a web based version, but I
assume that hasn't happened.
A web based searchable, extendable constructopedia would be most
useful to technic builders, most notably mindstorms robot builders.
I know how many times I've read text based descriptions of mechanical
systems that have left me scratching my noodle... :-)
Of course most include pictures, which greatly helps.
But we still don't have the database capabilities. New people come
along all the time, with the same problems, asking the same questions
again and again.
It would be nice if all of us could benefit from such a database that
describes the problem, and the solutions with pictures and ldraw files
where necessary.
So what we need is the web based version of Kego or something similar.

| The Lego-Robotics WikiWeb could be constructed as a Constructopedia It would be very easy to create a Yahoo!-style category hierarchy, and the search utility just about takes care of itself. I have added a few pages to it, documenting (and linking (...) (25 years ago, 7-Sep-99, to lugnet.robotics)
