I've seen this thread going, and going, and going; must be pretty
frustrating.  It seems like you said at one point that it works fine from a
PC, is that right?  If so, don't you have to use a serial adapter to connect
the IR tower to a Mac?  And if so, have you verified that that connector
isn't causing the problem?  I'd try a different one myself.  That's just my
half awake, hung-over 2 cents on it....

Hallo,

I have tried NEW batteries in ir tower and RCX.
I have tried to communicate in an absolute dark room with the same • results.
The ir tower is in near mode and the RCX in reset mode (take out the
batteries and switch on the RCX - put the batteries in place again).

The green led at the IR-tower is lighted trying to transmit some data. • The
diplay of the RCX shows the transmission symbol and counts up from 1 • to 20
for 10 times. After this the Macintosh displays the error massage.

This might be obvious, but try changing your tower and RCX batteries for
really fresh ones. Believe it or not, it has cured a few "flaky"
download sessions for me.

Also, what is the ambient light you are working in? Try shading the RCX • and
the tower.

By the way, near mode seems more reliable for me in a low ambient light
environment.

Cheers,

Hallo Will, it can't be the adapter cable which is wrong. With NQC -the very good programming software from Dave Baum- I have no problem to contact the RCX. Downloading the firmware, sending programs, starting programs ... it's okay. Everything (...) (25 years ago, 14-Jun-99, to lugnet.robotics)
