All the circuit boards have been cleverly designed to allow interfacing
between the sensors and the processor boards. The Lego CPU (aka the RCX)
uses an active sensor switching system that allows just two wires to both
power an active sensor and to receive the reading from it at regular
intervals. The circuit needed to do this is really just a couple of diodes,
and the O'Reilly book (Unofficial Guide to Mindstorms?) I think has a design
that would allow you to connect up sensors that need power. Alternatively,
there are a couple of web sites that offer lego compatible sensors (e.g.
ultrasonic disance sensors) if you do a search.
Passive sensors, such as light sensitive diodes would need careful
programming so that you could interpret the raw value, etc. This might
require NQC or LegOS, etc. Switches are fairly safe to build yourself.
As for communicating withteh Cybot, I am hoping that the Infra Red link that
the magazine has mentioned ight be hackable...RCX <-> Cybot?
