Parallax Basic Stamp I and II are incredibly simple microcontrollers
that I think can interface to the IR port easily. While the BS1 only sends
up to 2400 baud, the BS2 can do 38,400! You can find out a lot about these
devices, including the screaming new BS2-SX, at Parallax's web site at
http://www.parallaxinc.com/company/ . The software for their products is
absolutely free, you can make your own cables, and all you really have to
purchase is the stamps themselves, which are not expensive when you consider
how powerful and ready to go they are. I think that the BS2, with its 16
bidirectional I/O lines and serial port, would make for a great expansion of
the RCX by going through the IR port. By the way, they program in BASIC,
which is extremely simple to use and download. You write the program and
download it. No compiling or anything, and all you need is a 286 or better
with at least DOS 2.0. There are myriads of supporting sites, and a mailing
list to support it, of which I am also on.
