Hi all,

GardenSLUG will be hosting a meeting in central New Jersey on Saturday, May
third.  We're hoping to have a large turnout of the GardenSLUG regulars and by
opening the invites to surrounding communities and clubs, drum up some
wider-area interest and collaboration.

The agenda for this is wide open but we would like to make sure that it is a
fun day for everyone involved.  If you are interested and would like to see
something happen, let me/us know or just come prepared to make it happen and
maybe it will.  As you can see from
http://www.biomechanicalbricks.com/GardenSLUG/id3.htm I'm up for building,
planing, talking, building, playing, trading, building, wishing, peeking at our
new K8, building, showing off MOCs, eating, building, drinking, runing trains,
building, and whatever else.

If you are a little farther away (I guess I've included groups as far as a five
hour drive--Boston) but would consider coming anyway to have fun and build
bridges (or forts or trains or ships or houses...), we could put a few people
up so that you wouldn't have to drive home that same day.  Contact me for
details if you're interested.

We'll begin whenever people arrive (ten, noon, two, whatever) and end when
people leave or fall asleep.  A more distinct timeline will evolve as the time
draws closer.  We can have sandwich makings and chips and soda and beer or
order out (or even go somewhere) for food, whatever people want.

If you are interested but there is some one thing that's keeping you from us,
please let us know what that is as we are interested in broadening our regional
participation and getting to know you.  If you're interested in meeting the
other local LEGO nuts but are shy about getting together with internet weirdos,
come early and get to know the first few people and be 'established' as others
arrive -- we're good folks.

I'm preparing travel instructions from five directions and I'll distribute them
via email to those who want them.

I hope to see you there,

Christopher Weeks - GardenSLUG

I just thought I would chime in here quickly.

I know you noted in your first post that all followups would be to .loc.us.nj
but I would suggest keeping NY and Phi in the list that way you are sure
everyone gets it.  I would also suggest adding .org.us to the list so the other
Organizations know that you are trying to form a group.

I am interested for a couple reasons.

1.  So that once a name is chosen and things seem to be going well I can add
you to the LUGMAP.

2.  Because I am a member of NELUG I think it would be neat if someday a joint
meeting between NELUG and the NY/NJ/Phi LUG took place.

Anyway things seem to be shapeing up well so I will let you go back to your
business now.

I thought it might be nice to put some kind of club together

OK, it seems like there is enough interest to carry on with this so let's.
Are we all thinking a weekend day?  Is Saturday better than Sunday?  Should it
be for adults only?  How long a meeting?  What times?

Matthew Karius: my schedule makes it hard to find time for almost anything
that I can't take my kids to.

What age kids?  I have son who is almost six.  If there are a few folks with
kids of compatible ages, we could do a double LEGO based get-together (one for
kids and one for adults), but again, this might better be done at a later
meeting.

Who is interested?  I am imagining this to be for people centered on the
wideish corridor between NYC and Philly.  I am in central New Jersey.

I got a couple email responses, but they're at home and I can't see (or
remember) them right now.  So who want's to meet?  I see that we have interest
from:

Christopher Weeks (me)
Lindsay Braun (for 1.5 months, anyway)
Erik Olson
Andy Lynch
Bryan Kinkel
Jennifer Maher (and SO)
Laurajean Murphy
Matthew Karius

and I don't recall if the emails were from those listed above, or from others
who haven't chimed in.  Consider this an open invitation to anyone else out
there from whom we haven't heard.

This isn't the most important matter, but:

What would it be called?  NJLUG would be OK,

After suggesting that, I also thought of MetroLUG because I think of NJ
(though I know it's not really like this) as being divided between the metro
NYC and metro Philly areas, with just a touch of (pretend) rural areas around
the fringe.

Also suggested have been:

TriLUG for the tri-state area (NY, NJ, PA, I'd say)

UMALUG for upper mid-Atlantic LUG

DVLUG - Delaware Valley LUG

MPHLUG - Metro Philadelphia LUG

GPHLUG - Greater Philadelphia LUG

I would personally prefer to not use the last two because it limits the feel
of the name.  NYC people might not feel as free to participate and I'd like to
appeal to as broad an audience as possible.  Otherwise, I think they are all
acceptable names.  I'd still like to give some thought to names that are not
dependent on the LUG acronym.

Anything else to consider?

Well, I don't think that we really need to worry about a name until we actually
manage to get a group together.

BUT, having said that, I would cast a vote for one of the suggestions made by
Bryan Kinkel in the following post:
http://www.lugnet.com/loc/us/nj/?n=24

UMALUG would be the Upper Mid-Atlantic Lego Users Group.  It places our
location pretty well, I think.  Most of the other LUGs in the US seem to be
named for their region, and I don't think there is any reason to deviate from
that.  Unless, of course someone comes up with a really good name like STUDS,
which is one of the user groups in Australia. ( Really nice name people :-).
Also, I think UMALUG is pronounceable, kind of Oooh-maaa-lug. :-)

Goody, Chris is volunteering his house for a meeting.

Here's my view on the questions Chris lists:
1. Our purpose is to have fun with Lego. This would include bringing it with • you
and all the things that makes possible.
2. Who: well, NELUG opened this question and decided 18 and over (because • they
can't be responsible for other parents' kids.)
3. Formality: just enough that we know where the next meeting is and what to
bring.
4. Geography: like it says on the new quarter, New Jersey, the crossroads of • the
Revolution... we're all willing to drive into NJ from neighboring states.

The Acronym... "Tri-state" is a problem, and there's Delaware, too. I like
geological features for names, but this is too big an area to have a nice
mountain range or bay in common. NJLUG has the most clarity. (Note: I don't • live
in NJ.) It also eases the day when the other metropolitii get enough people • to
need their own acronym.

2) We should meet and talk about LEGO and organizational details.  And we
should further refine that kind of stuff online.

I vote for this option.  I'm located in Rockland County, NY and I'd be
interested in getting together with fellow Lego fans.  According to MapsOnUS
your house is about 1.5hrs away from me which is about the limit I could travel
(my schedule makes it hard to find time for almost anything that I can't take
my kids to).

For a name how about TriLUG.  The "Tri" would be for the tri-state area (either
the standard NY, NJ, and CT or the NY, NJ, and PA area this LUG seems to be
targeting.  Besides, it's pronouncable as a word.

My favorite theme is mostly the same as Chris's - clearence.  I like almost all
themes but Pirates are probably my favorite.  I'd be looking to meet other Lego
fans, get building ideas, trade, build, etc.

Regards,
Matt
