(Cross-posted from my blog, http://www.brickpile.com. Sorry about the delay -
I just now realized I never posted this on LUGNET...)
On Sunday, May 28, we (Bay Area LEGO Users Group)
installed our first-ever display at the LEGO Store in the Valley Fair Mall,
Santa Clara, CA. BayLUG Display at Valley Fair Mall Our display, changed out
about once a month, was previously at the Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton (such as
the
Microscale San Francisco in January and the
Aquarium
in February), but that LEGO store was closed in May and we were given permission
to have our display in Santa Clara instead.
The theme for this display was micro-scale space. Several of the contest
entries at the meeting on Saturday May 27 are featured along with a few others that were
built just for this display. Participating members include Russell, Bruce,
Charles, Adrienne, Jim, Justin, and myself.
We used several methods of displaying the flying models: some are taped to the
back wall, some hang from strings attached to magnets, which are stuck to the
underside of the shelf above, others hang from strings that are taped to said
shelf, and still others are attached by wire which is wrapped around the shelf
bracket above. Last time (the Aquarium) we used magnets and strings to suspend
models and many of them fell down, but that was probably due to the construction
in the shop next door. When this exhibit is over well see which method(s)
worked best.
My contribution to this display was the monorail you can see in the foreground,
which commutes between an office building and a
micro moonbase compatible
station. The track continues off to the left out of the scene. When the display
is over Ill post an entry highlighting just that model, with photos showing how
it was done, as I have done with entries from earlier store displays
(TransAmerica Pyramid,
Lombard
Street, and Fish). I also provided
the moon crater baseplates, which date back to the early 1980s Classic Space
LEGO era.

The Brick Testament website has been updated
today with two new stories providing an illustrated account of the second and
third of Israels judges, Ehud and
Shamgar:
10,000 Moabites Killed
600 Philistines Killed
(NOTE: For anyone unfamiliar with The Brick Testament or the Bible, please take
note of the content warnings for the
stories before viewing.)
Also a note for any fans of The Brick Testament in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I will be doing an in-store book signing appearance tomorrow night, Friday March
18, at the
Borders
Books in Sunnyvale, CA, starting at 7pm. If anyone can make it, it would be
fun to see some friendly faces, so please stop by. And if you already have a
copy of The Ten Commandments (or Genesis or Story of Christmas) Id be more than
happy to sign em, so bring em along!
Hope to see you there. :)

Those who are able to get to Eastridge Mall in San Jose might want to go look at
the selection at the KB toys store which is closing. All Lego are 30% off the
lowest marked price (most sets are already marked off). Here are some sample
sets:
1350 Werewolf Ambush 3.50
7201 Final Duel II 2.33
4731 Dobby's Release 3.50
6740 Xtreme Tower 20.00
7134 Jedi Starfighter 8.70
Here are some other sets I saw but I dont remember the price
6735 Air Chase
3421 3 v 3 shoot out
4727 Aragog in the dark forest
Those are the sets I can remember, there are others which I have already
forgotten. The sets are mostly older sets, like from before 2003.
Happy Hunting!

OK, it ended up being delayed for a month, but the San Jose Mercury News is
finally going to be running their story on The Brick Testament on Saturday,
November 22nd. Look for it in the Family & Religion section.
This latest flurry of media attention for the book seems to have given sales a
boost, and I saw that it's Amazon sales rank was in the 300's for the first time
last night. 335 was the best I saw, which meant it was beating out such books
as the latest collection from The Onion, and probably several other books that,
you know, people have actually heard of and stuff!
Thanks to everyone who's given the book their support!

--UPDATE!--
The San Jo Merc News alerted me today that this article has been postponed. I
also just noticed that I gave a conflicting date above. The article had been
scheduled for Saturday (tomorrow), but is now being delayed.
Ill post here again when I get notified of the date it will actually run.
As a consolation, theres some new US and foreign Brick Testament press on the
websites Press page, including:

An interviwer and photographer from the paper came by my house for an hour or so
last week, and it was one of the most fun interviews I've done so far, so I
expect the article will be a good read. Look for it in the Family & Religion
section.

FYI, the admins know about it, and the needed changes have already been
made to get the site back again, but the propogation of the changes may take
another day or two. :-(
If you are interested in the longer story, read on. Otherwise, go look for
a more interesting article somewhere else. ;-)
During the last month, a few things conspired, each threatening to take
the site off-line for a period of time...
1) The machine needed to move to a new hosting facility.
1a) The site we picked required us to install a new (rack-mount) server,
and the new hardware caused us to upgrade some of the software involved on
the server.
1b) The new site required us to change IP addresses on all of the server
records for that machine (30+ domains, including ours)
1c) The registrar for the primary domain was shifting it's users to a new
processes for changing info, which delayed changes for a few days (so all of
the other domains needed to wait for the first change to propogate...)
2) I left my job (and the machine had been hosted at my old company), so
they removed the DNS records for all of the domains sharing our server,
taking most of the domains off-line Sunday evening.
2a) Many of the domain owners are currently suffering the same
registrar-process-changes, so they were unable to update their domain
records with the new info.
2b) The old machine owner had been added to many of the domains when they
were moved to the server, so he spent most of Monday working with the
InterNIC folks to get most of the records changed.
2c) The main InterNIC root-server records were changed this morning at 9a
(PT), but may still take up to 48 hours for various proxy servers and
downstream caches to expire the old records and ask for the new info.
2d) Mail to some of the domains on the machine will also be off-line until
the caches time out and update. :-(
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Hello Avi!
BayLUG will be holding our next meeting on Saturday, May 18 at 10am. You are
welcome to join us. More info is at http://baylug.org. I don't know of any other
LEGO activities in our area in May.
I haven't done much shopping in stores lately, but I'm sure someone else will be
able to give you an idea about good places to go check out.
Let me know if I can be of any assistance or if you need some more info.

Sure. LMK when you plan to drop it off, or we can make plans for some other way.
BTW, I still have your fuel car and mummy car from the August National Train
Show :-) If my wife is home (and I'm not) if you are dropping off, I'll try
and arrange the return of your stock if that's convenient for you.

DARNIT!!!
I leave for New Orleans that afternoon, and can't be at the meeting (again...)
I'd like to meet Larry in person, too...
Tom, would you be willing to take my Train Contest entry to the meeting to
display it?

Hi all!
I've been emailing with Larry Pieniazek, and he says that he might be able
to attend some of our next meeting on 3/31.
Note that it's not set in stone. It depends on if he can make the time, as
he will be here on business in SF.

I checked with my local Big K (Sunnyvale, CA) and they don't know
anything about a sale on Legos. Maybe it's a regional thing? Anyone
seen any good deals in the Bay Area?

I'm thinking about tearing down there on MLK weekend, but only for one
LONG
day, since I've seen the park several times already.
Would anyone want to go down on 1/13-15, and any preference on which day
(I'd prefer 13 or 15, as my wife works those days)?
I don't know if I'd want to go by myself, as I'd rather split gas costs
with someone ;-)
If I DO end up going, the plan would be to stop by the Downtown
Disney (The shopping center between Disneyland and California
Adventures) on
the way to/from Carlsbad, so time planning would be critical.
According to a post in .general, the shop will be open 1/12.
