UK Legofest report

I think those present will agree that the recent Legofest - the first
in the UK as far as I know - was a great success.
I had arranged it on a Monday to fit in with Kevin Wilson's travel
plans, so attendance was expected to be limited. Nevertheless, all those
who had indicated they would come managed to find the house (no mean
feat given it's isolated location) and a good time was had by all. In
the event, it would have been difficult to fit more lego in the living
room anyway; the place was awash!
Attendance was as follows; myself of course, Kevin Wilson, a UK ex-pat,
on holiday from Vancouver, BC. Tony Priestman, who drove four and a half
hours from the North-West of England! Richard Franks, and his Canadian
girlfriend Laura (from Toronto), and lego and Star Wars collecting
friend Duncan, who drove down from the Glasgow area.
Things kicked off at 1300, with a break for dinner at 1800, and wound up
around 2100. Richard and co. returned at 2300 to retrieve Richard's
jacket (containing his keys and wallet) which had dropped down behind
the sofa! I took the photos, which I will make available once they are
developed.
I had encouraged everyone to bring stuff to swap, and so much horse-
trading went on, with the following deals being executed (memory
permitting);
In a pre-arranged deal, Richard and Duncan went home with a swathe of
pirate sets I had come by (a BSB, 6285 plus 6270, 6265, 6257, 6247, 6259
and 6260), in return for 3 Model Team sets, 5550, 5580 and 5590. Thanks
for that guys.
Tony had brought along a big haul of classic used town, train and space
sets which he was looking to sell to fund further lego excess (single,
working man, I'll say no more!). Kevin went home with 6644, 6638 and two
others which escape me. I took 7722, a real classic 4.5V train set, and
Richard took a couple of pirate sets. Tony also brought a selection of
new sets, from which I took 6483, the L&S police boat. Tony took home
two 2872 witch's fireplaces, and a selection of old catalogs from my
swaps pile.
Kevin went home with a selection from my older piece collection,
including some early white windows and vehicle doors, spoked wheels,
4.5V train wheels, space parts and so on, in return for two bags of
green bricks broken down from bucket sets and another bag of assorted
parts.
The opportunity to peruse everyone's catalogs, instructions and sets,
and discuss countless lego issues was not lost. I think everyone learned
something new along the way (like the parts I almost threw away because
I thought they were not lego - they turned out to be the coupling rod
guides off the 4.5V loco!).
I think I can safely say that this will become an annual event. I will
arrange things for a weekend next time, and give plenty of warning.
Watch this space.
Finally, thanks very much to everyone for coming and making it a
success, and to Mrs Bishop for doing the catering!

| Just got back home from my trip a couple of days ago, so I will add my 2c worth even if it is rather after the fact! The Scottish Legofest was a great way to start my holiday - I hardly felt jetlagged at all the whole afternoon (until I just missed (...) (25 years ago, 5-Aug-99, to lugnet.loc.uk)
