Hey Y'all:

Unceremoniously, I reveal my latest design: The Mutant Calamari.  See it here:
http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/blueofnoon/calamari/calamari.jpg
It's most excellent fried in breadcrumbs and then served with a little red
sauce and lemon juice...

After my negative review of the new #4796 Mutant Squid I decided to try and
give y'all a taste of what might have been if TLC still wanted to make good
sets.

Now, perhaps I am being too bold about the quality of my own design (it's
probably better if I leave the matter to you lot to decide for me) but it
does have some advantages over TLC's design: the operator enclosure is just
that -- closed and not open, the squid arms are not single purpose squid
arms or black horns but comprised of the traditional lego bendy arm, my
calamari has two arms with claw-like ends as do real life squids, my design
in profile has a rather squid like head despite it's being somewhat squared
off, my design has little fins as do real squids to propel themselves
through water, my design is comprised of many more non-juniorized elements
than the TLC design, my design is comprised of elements available as of the
year 2001 (most are quite old actually) and generally utilizes elements that
would be much prized to builders if they were to come in such a set -- I
know I could use more bendy arms, trans-red canopy extenders, trans-red
canopies, and tran-red half octagons.

One of the neat aspects of my design is that it is possible to get some of
my old-fangled stuff mixed in with the newfangled stuff: one could
absolutely have used the new arms instead of bendy arms, or one could have
opted for the new trans-red canopy over the old space-police canopy
(although I can't see why). Both TLC's design and my own are modular: arms
come off, can be shortened, etc.  I even have a variant in real life where I
HAVE actually conflated my design with some of the newer elements.  I keep
experimenting...

I'd be interested in opinions not only on the quality of my design, but in
reference to my design over the design recently issued by TLC -- in a head
to head comparison (if anyone wants it, I can post the DAT file for closer
examination).  Which is better, which has elements you would have preferred
to buy, etc.

Thanks,

-- Hop-Frog

P.S. Yes, that is a Blacktron figure wearing an old space jetpack in light
grey.  What else would I have put in the cockpit? =)

(...) I like the bendy-arm solution, but I think the old 4x10 canopy is fairly tired. The boxy shape doesn't do much for me either. What if you combined your bendy arms with the new canopies? ~Grand Admiral Muffin Head (22 years ago, 11-Dec-01, to lugnet.general)

J/w.... Review? I've never seen pictures of most of the new sets... I saw the shark when I was ordering my Final Duel I & II which, by the way, have arrived, and there are only 2 weeks and one day left till I open 'er up. Could you give me a link (...) (22 years ago, 11-Dec-01, to lugnet.general)

(...) Ah, so that's your angle. Okay, let's run with that. (...) Just how it should be. However, I'd prefer to see the smaller A-Wing and B-Wing cockpit covers used for this project. As a matter of fact, the B-Wing cockpit would almost be perfect (...) (22 years ago, 11-Dec-01, to lugnet.general)

(...) Richard, I prefer your design over TLC's. The most notable improvement seems to be your use of the bendy arm segments. While I applaud TLC for trying to incorporate the dino tails in new designs, a squid's legs/arms just scream for the (...) (22 years ago, 11-Dec-01, to lugnet.general)
