Everybody has heard the news about the attack, it's awful. Now show your
feelings and rebuilt the WTC of your LEGO-bricks. Show the world you're
shocked by the disaster, rebuilt the WTC and put it on your brickshelf
gallery account or website or whatever!

Have you seen this one, it was built a while ago, and unfortunately no longer
stands, but it's an amazing model nontheless. This guy's whole LEGO New York is
pretty much amazing...

Thanks.  Over the past 2 days, my Lego WTC page
(http://www.brickapple.com/wtc) has gotten a hundred times the traffic it
normally gets!

Yes, my friend knocked over my World Trade Center a few months ago, not long
after the first tower was complete.  (I now accuse her of practicing
voo-doo.)  My original plan was to build both towers, the other 5 smaller
buildings, the underground mall, subway lines, etc.

My tower was about 6 feet tall, and stood on a 32x32 stud baseplate.  It
separated in sections to make it easier to move, and swung open on hinges.
Many of the floors were in and had offices and elevators and things.  It
took 10 months to aquire all the pieces and build the first tower, mainly
because I used tons and tons of white 1x1 and 1x2 bricks to form the
vertical "striped" facade.

I've looked, but I haven't found anyone else who has built the WTC out of
Lego.  Actually, I got email once from someone who had made all of Manhattan
in microfig scale!  His WTC towers were 4x4 studs or so.  But no one else.

I fully plan on rebuilding the whole complex, even though the real one has
been destroyed.

If you are interested in building one, there are nice WTC photos, plans, and
comments from the Architect at www.greatbuildings.com.  I only wish I'd
taken more pictures in person. :(

I've designed a minifig-scale model with all 110 stories. Each tower would have
a footprint of 16 grey baseplates (4x4) and be about 30' tall. The two towers
would require approximately 1 1/2 million bricks and 83,000 windows. I won't get
around to building this for a while :-)

Hi Amy,

Any chance you can LDraw this?  If each floor is the same, you might be able to
get away with just copying and pasting chunks to build it up quickly.  It might
look really nice to put together and then render it with POVRay or somesuch ...

Just an idea that wouldn't impact the wallet so very much :)

Just a couple problems with that plan...

1) I need to run LDRAW in emulation (I'm a Mac person). Even on the fastest PC,
I doubt if I could realistically do even a small piece of it.

2) LDRAW removes the engineering challenge because it doesn't need to account
for gravity or the "curl problem". IMO, that defeats the purpose of doing large
projects.

The prospect of doing a project so large it requires scaffolding and ladders is
exciting, but I don't have the money or a room with a 30' ceiling :-)

Sounds like a job for TLC! I've never been to Legoland USA, perhaps there
already is a Lego WTC, but if not...
