Also sprach Nephilim:
: I'd still love to donate my time to such a project, and I
: see now that Jim is also interested.  Perhaps collaboration
: is in order?  I'll cc this exchange to Tom and see if his
: opinion on the matter has shifted in the intervening
: months.

I wouldn't mind a collaboration at all .... I haven't done anything
beyond the initial planning/outlining stages, but I foresaw a faq that
would use little if any of Tom's information anyway ... much of it is
outdated and the rest subject to frequent change.  Here were my ideas:

Strip out too-much-information sections like the price information for
Legoland Windsor.  Where possible replace this information with links to
sites which will carry this information and keep it updated.

Add an extensive 'reference' link section, which would point users to
various documentation sites, like the various Lugnet offerings, Lcad
documentation, Technic piece databases, etc.

In my judgement, trying to keep a comprehensive list of all the many
fan sites is beyond the scope of a faq, and the ommissions would likely
be greivous.  I'd point users to LCSotW and leave it at that.

Finally, I'd restructure the document to try to conform to a true Q&A
format, attempting to address some of the more annoying issues that come
up often from new users.

In no particular order, here are some of the things I think a FAQ should
cover.  Keep in mind that this is a very rough sketch based on a direct
cut-n-paste of my design notes.

Introduction - What is rec.toys.lego?
Am I too old for this group?
How can I introduce myself?
Are there any rules I should know about?
How can I get old Lego sets?
Why does everyone use auctions?
What are the rules for auctions?
What about straight sales?
Is there a price guide for used Lego sets?
I just need a specific piece or two.  What can I do?
How can I get current Lego sets?
Are there mail-order outlets for Lego products?
Help!  Mail-order isn't good enough!
What is LUGNET?
What are all these acronyms?  RTL?  BSB?  BURP?!?!
What is 'Town Jr'?
Do the set numbers mean anything?
What are themes and sub-themes?
Where can I find information about a certain theme?
Where can I find information about a specific set?
Can I get instructions to a specific set?
What are LDRAW, BLOCKCAD, LEDIT?
What is Mindstorms?
Are there any other programming interfaces for Mindstorms?
Are there any robotics sites for Mindstorms?
Where can I get information about specific pieces?
Does Lego have any retail outlets or attractions?
Where can I find information about the Lego company?
What are the rules for personal websites?  (insert fair play notice here)
Is Lego really going to make Star Wars sets?
Are there sites where users have posted creations?

My 2 bits: I like the idea of a new FAQ, with information that is relevant. It is obvious that the current RTL FAQ is not a priority for Tom Pfeifer, for whatever reason, and the rest of the community is suffering for it. He needs to realize that it (...)
