I'm wondering if anybody knows where the 6 larger bricks came from
and approximately when they were made (Gary I.??).  The "Baeckerei" and
"Tabak" bricks do not have "Lego" printed on the studs; it's only printed
inside the bricks.  The other 3 except the "Hotel" brick have "Lego" in
the older script on the studs, while the "Hotel" brick has the newer
script.  I think the "Hotel" brick may be ABS, while the others are almost
certainly cellulose acetate.  They're all a little warped/yellowed (except
the "Hotel" brick).

As a related question, I've noticed 3 different varieties of 1x2 plates,
and I think I only recall 2 in Gary's plate history.  One is the modern
with round pip in the bottom center, one the older with rectangular pip,
and the third is an older version with no pip.  Which is older, the
non-pip or the rectangular-pip version?

And I won't disappoint you, Alan!

The named beams without LEGO on the studs are circa 1955-57.  I have a few 1x6
white beams (some with names, some without) that don't have the LEGO logo.  The
(hollow bottom) named beams with the logo were from 1957- mid 60's.  The named
beams with the logo and with posts on the bottom were from the mid 60's to about
the mid 70's.  And all other sizes (besides 1x6 and 1x8) of signs are from the
late 60's to the present.

Last December I had a long EMAIL discussion with two very knowledgeable European
LEGO collectors, one was Phil Traviss of the UK and the other Kurt Richter of
Germany.  We really went off on a long tangent with the old named beams.  It
really astonished me as to how many different sets LEGO made (in different
countries) that had named beams (and here we're talking only the really old 1x6
and 1x8 white beams).  Here is a list (still incomplete) of the different sets
the 3 of us could come up with that had these named beams.  Phil and Kurt
provided most of this input:

Set#   Date         Description

210  1957-196?  Little Store (210W: WRSTCHEN, 210T: TABAK, 210B: BCKER)  (not
USA)
1210  1955-?      same as 210, early Danish version (Kobmand, Bager, Slagter)
226  1957-1965  7 Named Beams  (this is the regular named beam parts pack in
Europe/USA)
226   1957 -?       first German/Netherlands versions contained 8 beams, later 7

236  1957-1965  Garage with automatic door  GARAGE
261  1957-1964  Saloon car in Special Case  VW DEALER (VW Verkauf)  (not USA)
306  1957-1964  Double garage and 2 cars  VW GARAGE (VW Garage or VW
Verkauf)  (not USA)
307  1957-1964  Car showroom and 2 cars  DEALER (VW Verkauf)  (not USA)
308  1957-1964  Fire Station and Fire Engine  FIRE STATION (Feuerwehr) (not USA)

1308  1955-?      same as 308, early Danish version (FALCK)
309  1957-1962  Church with tree  AD 1762 (Anno 1762)  (not USA)
1309  1955-?      same as 309, early Danish version (1762)
310  1957-1965  Petrol Station with pumps and car  ESSO SERVICE (ESSO
Wagenpflege)  (Not USA)
348  ca. 1972       Garage kit with 2 Doors GARAGE
700     1957         Wooden Box early Town Plan type set - 7 named beams (not
USA/UK)
700/0  1960-1964  Basic Set  TAXI GARAGE CAFE DEALER (not USA)
700/K  1961-1966  Basic set in Wooden Box  as 226 (UK only?)  (not USA)
725  1961-1965  Town Plan Samsonite (ESSO SERVICE + HOTEL) (USA only)
810  1962-1969  Town Plan Set  ESSO SERVICE + HOTEL (not USA)
426  1966-1972  7 Named Beams  see pic (only UK)
491  ca. 65         SHELL Petrol pumps and 6 named beams (not UK)
990  ca. 75         V1/V2/V3 Set including 4 named white beams (not UK)

As you can tell from this list, LEGO made an astonishing number of different
sets with the old (1x6 and 1x8) named beams.  And it is not even a complete
list!  There are probably over 100 different name, font and color varieties of
these old named beams.  It makes for a great collecting variation.

With me being on an old Movie Theatre building spree, I have been buying up any
old THEATER or THEATRE signs I can find.  (A shameless plug!)  So far I have
found "THEATER" and "THEATRE" in black block letters, "THEATER" in black thin
letters, "THEATER" in red block letters,  "Theater" in red script, "Theater" in
black script, and "Grand Theater" in red script.  And this is only the Theater
signage!

Oh, and before I forget, that 1x4 LEGOLAND beam you have Alan was from circa
1968-77.  TLC made a lot of these 1x4 LEGOLAND beams in all sorts of colors (I
have red and yellow in my collection).  These are found mostly in 1970's sets.

And the letters and numbers are from parts packs.  They are probably #234
(letters) and #237 (numbers), which were produced from 1957-64.  Or they could
be #487 (letters) and #488 (numbers) from circa 1965-67.  In circa 1968 they
were switched to #987 (letters) and #988 (numbers).

And on your 1x2 plates question, I think that the oldest 1x2 plates are the 1x2
rectangular pip plates.  And the reason for that is because I have Cellulose
Acetate 1x2 plates (from the Architectural Parts packs #521 from 1963-65) that
have the rectangular pips.  These CA plates were the very first ones produced in
1963.  It appears that sometime in 1963 or perhaps 1964, TLC switched to ABS
plates.  I'll have to do some more investigation to determine the age of the
"pip-less" plates.
