Why is such a large portion of LUGNET made of compartmentalized dorks?

From Todd Lehman: !

In a thread entitled “This is irritating” in RTL, it’s been suggested that “Lugnet was designed for compartmentalised dorks” and that “[it’s] for the dorks who can’t make up [their] own mind whether to read a posting or not” and that I am “constantly telling people where they can and can’t post a message on the threat of being expelled”...

I personally happen to disagree with these opinions, but am concerned about how such an impression could have formed, and whether other people share that view.

From Tim Courtney: !

Is this a medical condition, maybe, Compartmentalized Dork Syndrome? ;-)

From Lindsay Frederick Braun: !

What do you mean there is no “lugnet.dork.compartmentalized”?!?

From Matthew Miller: !

Sure there is: lugnet.people.traits.psychology.neuroses.obsessive.compulsive.nntp.posting. groupchoice.discrete

From Jeremy Sproat: !

...As the noise level [on lugnet] increases, it’s still amazingly easy to discuss and follow exactly what Lego-related ideas we want, with who we want, because of the “compartmentalization”. And LUGNET has this wonderful search engine. To try this level of flexability -- nay, freedom -- with RTL typically requires the use of some fairly sophisticated newsreader software and a good understanding of prior traffic patterns in the newsgroup. No problem for elitist power-users, but the typical user gets left behind in RTL. Chats with a bunch of power-nerds is fine, I do that every day at work, but I’d rather discuss Lego stuff with a larger group.

From Frank Filz: !

I’m rather of a comparmentalized dork (there’s nothing like defusing an insult by willingly taking it on as a label for oneself...:-)

From Shiri Dori:

LUGNET was orignially made up of people who got bored/annoyed with RTL. Everyone was posting everything everywhere. Well, Todd here fixed that on LUGNET, and everyone who liked compartmentalization and dorkiness came here. Now that LUGNET has become the only good thing for lego fans, and everyone hates RTL, there is nothing to do but to deal with us dorks. Muahahahaha!
