Lego prices in the US vs. Europe

I always found it fascinating to see that a Lego set was cheaper in the US than
in Denmark, for instance. That did not seem right. This was simply by comparing
prices in S@H, easily done by switching the country flag.

It may start making sense if we include VAT -- in some places it is upto 25% of
the price. US prices do not reflect tax until you provide shipping details. The
tax tends to vary by state, with some states not having any sales tax.

Now when I compute the prices taking into account the exchange rate, some sets
start to become cheaper in Europe than in the US. The new Technic Motorized
Excavator is worth noting in this regard. It is $200 in the US - even the worst
case situation shows it to be cheaper in Europe.

Did I miss something? OF course Canadiens may still be getting a raw deal. I
have not put in the effort to check other countries and continents.

Anyway, I tried everything myself and narrowed the issue down to the primary cookie being created - the cookie name being used in LUGNET apparently is not very much to Safari’s liking, however since cookie naming is embedded deeply in the code, this is not changed easily.

I will try to change the name of the login cookie to a name that will be accepted by Safari. I will update you when things are fixed. In the meantime, your best bet would be Firefox which I have found is a very useful piece of software on all operating systems.

I too ran into this same problem. I was unable to login to lugnet using Safari 3, but can login successfully using Firefox 3.

I was able to login in the past with Safari 2 with no problems.

Might this be a bug in webkit ?

hI Matthew,

you might try downloading the Firefox web browser and see if that helps. if not there may be some issue with the set up you are using to connect to the web. we’ve had some users at the university not be able to loginto various systems due the configuration of the wireless connection in various “free” wifi businesses . we recommend the use of firefox as it tends to be more compatibility with pc based web systems. it’s apparently easier for the programmers to code for firefox as it’s on both pc’s and mac’s, than for safari which used to be mac only.

perhaps another macuser will be able to help with this as I tend to lurk and haven’t ever actually ‘logged into ’ lugnet

Me too!

I may be misunderstanding the problem, but I think you simply need to set up the
new address for posting messages (at http://news.lugnet.com/news/post/setup/) as
well as in your LUGNET profile.

When I initially registered to Lugnet back in 2002, I had plague(at)videotron.ca
as email address.
A year later I dropped that email and entered my two new valid ones in my Lugnet
profile,

However, I cannot find any way to change it for when I post on the forums.

When I try with stephane_simard(at)videotron.ca, it tells me it can't validate
this address yet ... and sends me to the posting setup procedure page. But even
when I go through with it, it either doesn't work, or puts me back to the old
plague(at)videotron.ca

Help!

Hi Akos,

It’s nice to see the LEGO community moving with the times onto more current forms of content such as wikis. I wasn’t aware of BrickWiki but it seems an admirable community product!

Glad I could be of service for the Hungarian version as well! :-)

Hiya folks,

Was googling myself (uch, nasty habit(1)) today and saw that I haven’t touched the acronym FAQ in over two years. My inclination is always to do a quick search on the word “acronym” and see if anyone needs new updates, but the matter of fact is, I’m not really following lugnet at all.

So, my question to you is - is there a need for a live, updated FAQ? Or is the old one “good enuff”? And, is someone interested in taking over? If so, please let me know by email - shiri.dori AT gmail.com. (not sure how to change my authentication email). Or, just copy the FTX source and run with it. Just don’t forget to give credit where credit is due (mostly to Derek Schin, and a bit to yours truly ;-)

All the best,

-Shiri

(1) ...six years later: CastLEGO has finally dropped to second place after my LinkedIn profile. Not sure when exactly that happened. Only 3 of 7 results are lego-related (used to be 9 of 10, my DBLP page was the first to sneak in) and my relatively-recently opened blog barely makes the top twenty. Hehe.

Ah! We were typing at the same time. Thanks, Thomas.

I see on that site that the list is labeled: "10 Important LEGO Features" rather
than "Core Values".

..Also interesting there is a list labeled:
"10 Important Requirements for LEGO Effort and Results":
1 — Be objective and truthful
2 — Be positive and simple
    3 — Be economical
    4 — Be international
5 — Stimulate enthusiasm and inspiration
6 — Encourage imagination and activity
7 — Keep the Lego characteristics
8 — Place the matter ahead of personal matters
9 — Follow up on the matter
10 — Comply with the fundamental idea

Ah, here it is. From the book, "50 Years of Play":

The 10 LEGO Criteria for a good toy, guidelines for development of the product:
10 Important LEGO features
1. LEGO = unlimited play potential
2. LEGO = for girls, for boys
3. LEGO = fun for every age
4. LEGO = year-round play
5. LEGO = healthy, quiet play
6. LEGO = long hours of play
7. LEGO = development, imagination, creativity
8. LEGO = the more LEGO, the greater its value
9. LEGO = extra sets available
10 LEGO = quality in every detail

And of course there was the motto from the 1930's"
"Only the best is good enough."

So, perhaps I was incorrect in having thought this list was of "core values". It
seems like they were more like "product guidelines". (sorry!)

According to a press release in 2001, the core values were: imagination,
creativity and fun. The newest diagram adds two more: quality and learning.

I don't even see it in our old rtl FAQs. Does anyone have a copy they can post
here?

And, LEGO Company, why is the list missing from the LEGO website? Have the
values been replaced with by your new (rather vague) diagram? If so, when
exactly did the original list go away? (curious)

As I recall, some were:

- quiet play
- fun for both girls and boys
- more product equals more possibilities
- [something about quality]
- [something about timelessness?]
- [something about creativity/imagination]

I'm embarrassed that I can't remember them. :-/

I guess I'll look for an old copy of their press kit...
