The Blank Shields

Mercenary Mountain

The front view shows how small a fortress the first Mercenary Mountain was. There were barely two dozen mercenaries in Dhugal’s company at this point, and they were already straining the limited space.

Also of note are the flags visible in these pictures. Obviously, this dates from the very early days of the company, before they eschewed the use of all emblazons in favour of the grey field.

An overhead view shows the open caldera of the old volcano the keep was built on.

One of the advantages of this site was the fresh water lake & grazing area in the well-protected space behind it.

Also apparent here is how little of the volcano is actually fortified. Most of the keep is underground.

A close-up shows us clearly that Dhugal’s company still resembles a band of thugs much more than the military company they would become.

When you’re struggling to get food, uniforms just aren’t in the budget.
